Windows 10 boot camp

We're hearing that Windows 10 is RTM this week. Please get crackin' on the Boot Camp updates for installing Windows 10 because ... you know ... Windows 10 is really, really good. Been using it as an Insider for months now.

iMac hardware + Windows 10 = good times.

Would also appreciate it if Apple would finally release the drivers needed for:

  • Plug 'n Play support for Thunderbolt devices
  • Sleep mode in Windows 10
  • Pretty much everything else in Windows that Apple appears to have neglected on purpose

Thank you.

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4), 32GB RAM

2012 models are a much better choice compared to 2006 models. 2006 models will most likely work, but drivers and compatibility is not in the interest of vendors who make hardware. Planned obsolescence is how revenue streams are kept alive. I would recommend a late 2013 or later model, because these models are first Macs which are UEFI compliant. Running a preUEFI Mac with W10 is not what I would consider a very good choice, unless there are other non-technical constraints.

Thanks though, so you don't recommend 2012 as my main laptop ?

I will recommend a Late 2013 or later model.

Also since you are a charlie chaplin fan I thought you would be interested in seeing this video that came out today https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WP8umpgEos0

It is tragic to see such shining examples of achievement being stolen for the sake of money. Thank you for providing the link.

I have the Late2013 rMBP - 15-in 2.6 i7/16GB/1TB. I bought from Apple's refurbished store. Have you checked it? It is a bit higher - http://store.apple.com/shop/product/G0PU2LL/A/refurbished-154-inch-macbook-pro-2 6ghz-quad-core-intel-i7-with-retina-display .

I would recommend the Late2013 because it is a UEFI-compliant Mac, which is a key parameter in my decision.

Two replies (sorry about that - just want to get the buying advice out first).

Macs have used EFI 1.1 for quite some time. UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) is an Intel standard which was considered the next version of the legacy BIOS and also addressed some it's limitations. WiKiPedia has some pretty nice articles.

It allows an interface (and is extensible) to query and manage hardware resources in a modular fashion. The Late 2013 are the first Mac models to comply with it. This unifies the hardware interfaces across many OEMs. You can directly install windows without using BC Assistant on such Macs. You can resize Windows at will, because it uses GPT disks supported by UEFI.

Please see http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/unified-exten sible-firmware-interface/efi-specifications-general-technology.html and other links on this page, if you want to fall asleep in 30 seconds or less. 😉

cannot access apple format HDD,

If you Mini is running OS X prior to Yosemite and you have the BC Drivers installed (these contain a JHFS+ driver), you should be able to read the OS X volume. On Yosemite and later, the default is a CoreStorage LVG/LV, which has no drivers provided by Apple. If you post the output of diskutil cs list from OS X Terminal, there may be an option to revert to a JHFS+ file system.

Thank you tho I didn't understand what you said, it's too advanced for me 😁

I always make a windows-to-go usb drive, then boot from this windows-to-go directly, not through bootcamp at all, after booting into the windows, I install the BC drivers, so no bootcamp app of mac os involved... I guess Apple will need to update their BC drivers to fully surport windows 10, at least bluetooth driver doesn't work, tho I dont use bluetooth, also the mac volume was not mounted, can't assign a drive letter for it in disk managerment of windows 10. So we have to wait the new drivers pack from Apple I think, now I switch back to windows 8.1 for now 🙂

1. Does W8.1 let you read the OS X volume?

2. In OSX Terminal run the following commands and post the output after you remove any personal information, as you see fit.

diskutil list

diskutil cs list

3. Windows-to-go is the full Windows OS on a portable medium available under Windows Enterprise licensing. Windows Installer USB created by BCA is not the full Windows OS. Need to clarify what was used. BC Drivers are located in Bootcamp folder of the Windows Installer USB and can be installed/repaired using setup.exe from this folder.
