hp two sided printing checkbox keeps clearing

Recently printing double-sided on my HP Officejet Pro 8500 has become a problem. This worked fine until about the time of 2 HP Printer Software Updates were provided by Apple via App Store updates.

  • Version 3.1 Installed Jul 3, 2015
  • Version 3.1 Installed Jun 29, 2015

I have made no other printer driver changes or changes to the printer itself. This problem happens on two different Macbook Pros. Both are running OS X 10.10.4.

I can launch System Preferences, then "Printers & Scanners", select the Officejet Pro, and then click on "Options & Supplies..." where under the "Options" tab I check the HP Two-sided Printing Accessory (Duplexer) box as shown here.

And then I can print double sided like I always have before these updates. However, some time later (possibly after the Macbook goes to sleep) this same checkbox CLEARS ITSELF and I once again lose the ability to print double-sided. The ability or inability to print double-sided is common across all applications.

How can I fix the extremely annoying and recently introduced bug?

I am so excited that you have found a solution!

Now I am trying to install the "HP Officejet 6500 with its airprint driver" - can you help me here?

How do I install a driver for a printer that I do not have?

When I go to http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_pagetype=s-002&h_page=hpcom&h_client=S-A -R163-1&cc=us&lang=en&h_lang=en&h_produc… all the product links tell me to go to Apple Software Update.

Any help much appreciated!

Well, in my case it IS the Officejet6500. I do not know, if this works with other printers.

But installation should be no problem. Go to System / Printer, add a printer, select yours, give the installation a new name for security reasons and then choose in the last entry "Choose software" (sorry but my installation is in German, I translated the entries). There you should be able to choose the driver you want to use.

Thank you Orgelfreund - I am making progress! I am now able to choose other software with my printer as you suggested.

However, I thought that the drivers for the HP Officejet 6500 with airprint could be used with my printer (HP Officejet Pro 8500A Premium e-All-in-One Printer - A910n) and the Duplex setting would not clear once set. That didn't work, but I found another e-All-in-One Printer on this list (About AirPrint - Apple Support))

and added that software (HP Officejet 4630 e-All-in-One Printer series) with my printer (HP Officejet Pro 8500A Premium e-All-in-One Printer - A910n). So far it works! Perhaps that works because as you said that printer does not have a Duplex option.

At this point, I don't care as long as it continues to work. I have spent far too much time working on this...

Thanks again!

I have the Officejet Pro 8500A Plus A910 with the same problem. So, I followed your instructions, reinstalled it with a new name, and it automatically gave me the 2.0 driver and is holding the duplex printing selection. The choices like print quality, etc. look somewhat different than with the later driver, but everything I need seems to be there. Thanks very much!

I have spent several hours on the phone with Applecare to try to resolve this issue, to no avail. They have even done a video capture of what I do, including the fact that the Two Sided printing box automatically deselects after every print job is completed and sent this to their engineers, but still no resolution. And now, you have isolated the problem to their printer driver. This kind of thing is rapidly eroding my confidence in Apple, as the reason I left Windows and Windows-based computers and was willing to pay much more for an Apple was because it allowed me to escape these same kinds of issues. With this and other less problematic issues I've encountered over the last year or so, Apple is giving me incentive to re-investigate the less expensive Windows-based options. That's a very bad move on their part. I've spent a lot of money with them since I made the switch 7 years ago. Nonetheless, I'm grateful that users like you post solutions (sadly, workarounds to bad programming, really) that take far less time to get to a workable solution.

Thanks for your quick replies. Sorry for not replying sooner, but I had four iMacs to update to Yosemite and they did not all have this problem. Now, however they apparently conspired to join forces 🙂. I haven' t had the time to experiment with various drivers, will post any news if there is any.

Faxing directly from the iMac is essential in our case, which was´t possible with the older drivers and Yosemite, two-sided printing, though a nuisance, is not as important, since it is possible by resetting the check-box in the system preferences everytime.

I have an HP OJ Pro 8500a Plus. I deleted the printer, then added it again. I took the option to choose a driver and installed it with the "HP Officejet 6500 E709n Series" driver. While I haven't given it a full test, I was able to print two or three documents in a row without the duplex setting changing.

Since the 6500 doesn't have an alternate input tray, you don't have an option of selecting it if you have one.

It looks like this might be a workaround, but I don't know whether this will affect how documents print, or how Yosemite communicates with the printer.

Still, this is a work around and I would like to put in a vote for HP fixing this problem.

Update:

I reinstalled the printer (HP Officejet Pro 8500A) and chose the "HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909n Series" driver instead of the A910 series driver.

The Fax I left installed as is with the A910 driver.

All three functions (print, scan and fax) have been working flawlessly for several days now; seems to be a fix (no thx to HP or Apple).

Mac OS: Yosemite 10.10.5
