Mac mini EFI Firmware Update-1.8 does not install

I have a late 2012 Mac Mini and the most recent firmware update is failing to install. Everything 'looks' fine, the package installs and the machine reboots. Next time I do software update, it says the package is available and should be installed.

Same occurs when installing from a manually downloaded package (i.e AppStore not participating in the update)

I have tried this booting from both the internal drive and external drives - The hardware overview informations does not change and softwareupdate still thinks I need to install it - irksome !!

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: Mac mini

Model Identifier: Macmini6,2

Processor Name: Intel Core i7

Processor Speed: 2.3 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 4

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

L3 Cache: 6 MB

Memory: 16 GB

Boot ROM Version: MM61.0106.B08

SMC Version (system): 2.8f0

Thanks

I can't say for sure but my guess would be that you have 2 versions of OS X installed, you have Yosemite 10.10.4 and you appear to have a second partition with El Capitan installed. I would recommend that you post on the El Capitan forum and see if any other 2012 MM users are having problems.

I do see some other issues however I can't say they would have anything to do with this issue. First is you have multiple ad blocking extensions installed. In addition you have Growl installed which has been known to cause problems. You also have a large amount of both Internet plugins and Launch Daemons. Finally I see you also use Java, as you likely know this can be problematic as it is known to also carry malware if not installed per Apple's instructions. Unless you absolutely have to have Java, I would uninstall it.

My suspicion is because you have a mature system and have downloaded LOTs of stuff, there may be a conflict somewhere that is causing the issue. If I am correct the only thing to do is to start over and do a clean install and then manually only thing apps and extensions you need to use.

If you don't want to go to that trouble then you can attempt to boot into Safe Mode and attempt to install the update while in Safe Mode.

Good luck.

One of the other details, is the memory module clock speed of the RAM upgrade you

have installed is slower than the original or recommended specification of 1600MHz

204-pin SODIMM DDR3 PC3-12800 (2x 8GB) as Apple + reputable vendors suggest.

While that may be a problem in some instances, such as slower clock speeds, I am

not in a position to determine if that may have some bearing on EFI upgrade issues.

If you have the original RAM the unit shipped with, you could test that aspect; since

the quad-core 2.3GHz i7 Late 2012 shipped with 1600MHz 204-pin specs as above.

Mine appears to be doing OK, with the as-shipped Mavericks 10.9(.5) and 4GB RAM.

However a few odd issues resulted after EFI upgrade, and after restarting 2x.

Good luck in this matter! 🙂
