Excel spreadsheet cannot be updated from iPad Dropbox to MacBook Air?

New user and unfamiliar with this forum. No apple support or training north of Brisbane. Phone support is a 1300 phone number which is too expensive if you only have an iPhone. I tried online support and after 2hrs of being switched to different 'helpers' they managed to wipe my entire history of emails. Not brave enough to try it again! Appreciate advice..... Diane

Sorry - I have large spreadsheets with various formulas,if I open one from the Dropbox on the iPad it gives me a message

"Cannot Update Workbook

This workbook can't connect to external data or it contains macros that will not run in this version of a Excel"

I only bought the iPad earlier this year and need to find a way to update spreadsheets created on my MacBook Air.

thanks FoxFilth

According to the following link to Microsoft support, there are a number of features that they don't offer on the iPad version of Excel. One of those is macros and if there are macros in the spreadsheet you created on the MacBook and you open it on the iPad, it will generate that error message. See the following for the features supported:

If that doesn't help, you may want to post a question on the Microsoft support site. Following is a link to their Office for iPad section: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_mobile-excel-os_device_ip ad?tab=Threads

If your iPad isn't running the latest version of Excel, you can find that out and update by using your iPad. Open the App Store app on your iPad, tap Updates at the bottom of the screen and it will show any apps that you have installed which are not up to date and allow you to update them over wi-fi. However, as I noted in my post above, if your spreadsheets use macros, it doesn't appear that even the current iPad version of Excel supports that.

I suspect that the store where you bought the iPad, even if it is an Apple Store, will not have much knowledge of what the iPad Excel app will and will not do. You are likely to get better information on the Microsoft forum that I provided the link for in my reply above.
