What version of the OS and of iPhoto do you have?

You have two routes to take in order to be able to purchase an iPhoto book online:
1 - To get iPhoto 9.xx purchase a copy of the iLIfe 11 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com or eBay.com. That will install iPhoto 9.0 and you can get to 9.4.3 vis these updaters:
1 - update to iPhoto 9.2.1
2 - update to iPhoto 9.3
3 - update to iPhoto 9.3.2
4 - update to iPhoto 9.4
5 - and finally to iPhoto 9.4.3 - requires 10.7.5 or later.
Note 1: iPhoto 9 (11) doesn't necessarily have the same themes that iPhoto 8 has so you may have to redo the book partially with a new theme
2 - upgrade your system to Yosemite (free) and use the new Photos app to purchase your book.

Hi Old Toad -
You are a treasure to the Mac community. I've had a Mac since 1986 and have done reasonably well keeping up with each new hardware and software versions over the years. With this latest upgrade to Mavericks (forced upon me to run the latest version of Sketchup), I can still run my Adobe CS 5.5 stuff and everything else I have (that I know of), but I was really surprised to find that iPhoto wouldn't work and Apple support was very disappointing. Your post was a welcome find. Thank you very much. - Ruth
iPhoto was not deleted from your hard drive, only removed from the Dock. If you have iPhoto 9.6.1 you can still use your iPhoto library.
If you don't have that version but some earlier version of 9.x try following Terence Devlin's instructions in this post to obtain iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash.
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
