Is it possible? and How to install Leopard into old G4 with Tiger

Hi Everyone!

This topic is actually continued from an older one: Adding External Hard Drives to Mac G4 with Tiger Discussion Continues https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7126334http://

The discussion changed over the days to become one of: If it is possible to install Leopard into an old G4 ?

Here are the copies of the discussions at the end of that topic above.

I hope its ok with Apple Community to copy them over here.

Re: Adding External Hard Drives to Mac G4 & Tiger--Discussion Continues in response to Mac_Help

Your statement about OSX 10.5 requiring Intel is incorrect. Some G4s can run Leopard with no problem.

You need to look at all links in the system and you also need to ask what is required. Newer enclosures support >2.2 GB drives. I bet the one you have will support it. I have not used a 4TB drive with this computer so I only have the information from the chat session I had. A formatted 4TB drive will work with my G4 with Tiger OS (in essence no different to yours). However, many drives do not come formatted for Macs and the person with whom I chatted was uncertain Tiger OS has the capability to format large drives, though once they were formatted they would work with Tiger. In my case if I bought a newer docking station and I used (for example) my wife's 1 year old MacBook Pro to format the drive (which likely comes formatted for Windows) to Mac HFS, I could then take the new dock and drive back to my G4 and go ahead and use it.

I provided the above information about the Voyager because that is what I use and am interested in buying but is has information that is 90% relevant to your situation too. You do not need an old model. You do not want an old model unless you plan on using a drive less than 2.2 TB. The only real reason for wanting an older Voyager would be if it supports Firewire booting of a computer (required for G4) and for all I know your enclosure might (you have to ask OWC).

Drive reviews are tricky, By the time a drive has been around long enough to get decent reliability estimates it is usually no longer sold. I don't really know anything about the Toshiba drives. My feeling is that if they are being put in as the standard drive when buying a package it is because they are the cheapest and they have to be cheap for a reason, but no data. Look at drive reviews (Newegg is a good place because there are hundreds of reviews for each drive). Many of the bad scores are for dead-on-arrival drives. There's a bit of data on early failure drives which is handy but just about every single drive out there has some of that. There's occasionally a bit of information about heating and noise levels (handy if your drives are going to run 27/7 on your desk but less critical if it is for a quick backup then turn off).

I'm actually surprised the 4TB HGST drives are rating reasonably highly. Hitachi had some pretty poor ratings about a year ago and although nobody has glowing ratings for any drives the Western Digital ones seemed not too bad as long as you went for something in the "blue" line or higher.

Re: Adding External Hard Drives to Mac G4 & Tiger--Discussion Continues in response to Mac_Help

And of course my G4 is Apple chip---will not take the Leopard 10.5 as that needs an Intel chip

Nope, G4s & G5 PPC Macs can run 10.5..8 Leopard, but 10.6.0 Snow Leopard & above requires IntelMac...

Gray 10.5 Install Discs would be not only machine specific, but Intel ONLY.

Leopard requirements/10.5.x...

* Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor

minimum system requirements

* 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)

* DVD drive for installation

* 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

Classic/OS9 Apps no longer supported.

Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

http://http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=mac+os+x+leopard+retail+10.5

There are workarounds if the 867MHz CPU is the only hangup...

List of Applications Not Compatible with Leopard...

http://guides.macrumors.com/List:Applications_Not_Compatible_with_Leopard

As far as google translate, go here & put the URL in intend of text...

As far as drives, I'd opt for this one...

But actually 10.4.11 & up can handle any size drive if GUID Partitition scheme instead of APM, but will not be bootable, just useable for data R/W.

Those "black" (better than blue) Western Digital drives are supposed to be pretty good but it's a tough call when for $20 more you could get one of those 4TB HGST...

Been very happy with my Blacks, never tried a Blue, won't try a Green, & no idea what a Red is!

====================================================================
Hi Everyone!

Thank you for all your research and writing to me!

I did some of my own...

I tried to number things so everyone can refer to a "Q" "Question" number or so...

Q1: This Apple Community Forum Article says my exact Mac can run Leopard!

JUST DISABLE THE Three D and transparent Dock and a few other things and its OK runs fast or faster than Tiger!!

http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/os-x-operating-system/132763-will-my-powerbook- g4-support-osx-10-5-leopard.html

==============
Q2: But I also researched the fact of why I was informed (misinformed??) by those who should know these things... that I should "never" attempt to put Leopard into my particular G4 Power Book....

Q3: I found out this gem of information that I remembered from before when I had to get TenFourFox to replace "Firefox" as it no longer functioned with Tiger so I was off the internet until I got a replacement. (Safari 4 was refused access at many sites that I try to visit and or need to access/visit)

TenFourFox comes in different tuned versions for specific PowerPC processor families:
TenFourFox G5
TenFourFox G4 - build 7450
TenFourFox G4 - build 7400 (also for 7410)
TenFourFox G3more...

G5 has one "processor family!"

G 3 has another one

G4 HAS TWO! types of "builds" for its system

and that is ALL THE DIFFERNCE

Why Leopard DOES not work for G3 and ONE of the two builds for G4

and why Leopard DOES work for other one of G4 build and G5 and higher

This is what I was told

and here is the proof I was looking for in print

it is for the Ten Four Fox Browser but I'm looking for more proof in other apple sections of help or problem solving sections etc. why it does not take Leopard

Q3:
IN REPLY TO BDAqua about not using the "Grey" disk to install Leopard, I found this helpful piece of information:

This article in Apple Communities 2012 LINK;;;;; https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3940381
says you need Black faced full retail version of Leopard!

You'll need to use a black-faced retail version of 10.5 Leopard. Since this is a new installation on a blank hard drive, don't use the black-faced upgrade disk, as it requires OS X 10.4 to be installed to work. If you have a bootable backup, and an upgrade 10.5 disk, you could copy that using SuperDuper! or CCC to your new hard drive then use the upgrade disk.

Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs..

Apple Community Discussion Thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3940381

actually gives the model numbers of the Black Retail disk for me to search for if and when I go to attempt to do this process.....

For now.... I still ask and write back to everyone with even more questions!!

For example: How to actually do the Leopard Installation of OSX.. step by step: This shows it

https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/48242/How+can+I+install+mac+os+x+10.5

Shows and demonstrates it on a You Tube Video!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chaLssk-Jno

Q4: Wwaaaaittt a minute!

This is not like upgrading from Panther to Tiger which I did "myself" in 2011.

I lost "nothing"

I erased "nothing"

I formatted "nothing"

and I got upgraded to "Tiger"

(Similar to upgrading "Windows" I've done that too by myself).

Q5: The instructions for Leopard, as seen in this You Tube video, seem to state I must totally erase and reformat the HDD of the PowerBook to put in Leopard (I have backup of course) but putting it back in I might lose (LOSE!) all programs that needed current passwords or product keys to initialize the program to work on a "new" operating system like Leopard!

Q6: I may lose all my mail contacts and mail servers (which is what happened to the relative) as I have OLD OLD servers from 2004 and the company who is still charging me for Email keeps telling me to "migrate" it all to a "newer" computer---not a Leopard but Mavericks or Mountain Lion at least! They can't help me with older migrations as they cancelled that out years ago...

So all my Email may be lost and no one will be able to write to me or me to them if I lose my Email addresses and client servers and who knows what else has to be manually installed and of course I have no "disks" for this as it was all done "on line" without any backup programs!

Q6: Who knows how many other programs I have that were downloaded from places "online" and who will no longer support Leopard!

I can tell you ONE program I researched as far as I can go on my G4 Tiger---it is the Mac version of Microsoft Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Entourage etc). I got the "product key" as a student which means the "college" installed it for me using their Product Key for everyone... I do NOT own the product key. If I "erase" the HDD, I will lose the program as it will not reinstall itself without a "current" product key i.e. read that to say I have to pay for one---and at "Leopard" standard it might be old and cost a lot---as I'm really using one from "Panther" installation that was maintained through the Tiger upgrade!
THUS I'm sorry to say, this is how I'll end up with a Leopard Computer and nothing to do on it! Nothing but Apple stuff like Time Machine or Text Edit but if I did not save on those but used third party programs like Office, I'm out of luck retrieving to view or edit or print out old items and forget about making new items at all... This is NOT a good reason to switch to Leopard if it means losing all that (and potentially my Email client as well!)

Q7: I thought it was just an "upgrade" from Tiger to Leopard! IT seems like this is a whole new functioning system.... maybe due to its ability to work with Intel?

Q8: I have no help here for someone to physically step by step help me along to do this right..... I certainly can't ask Apple Store Genius bar to help me.... its too late for that!!

And by the way---they told me it was impossible to do this with my old Mac so I could buy a new printer----they of course, recommended I buy a whole brand new Mac!!

Q9: But I'm running out of time. My old HP 8500 Wireless printer is only one left alive that works with "Tiger" as the refurbished ones have new software---I can't get mine repaired as they will put in the new software HP tells me---and [you guessed it!] the "new" software of the printer only runs under Leopard 10.5 not Tiger, so that means I cannot print at all once I fix the HP printer (or buy any of their new off the shelf ones---all say they needs 10.5 (actually a LOT now say its 10.6 minimum! I'd better hurry up! and make some decision soon here!)

Q10: Also don't forget the start of this discussion was the fact I'm soon to be running out of External Hard Drive space on the G-Drive units. The last of them that run on Tiger.

Then I'm forced to buy either Seagate and its high Failure rate..

Or buy and put in an enclosure a Toshiba that I cannot get ratings on yet... (and as someone above very astutely pointed out to me... by the time the drive gets "ratings" its usually no longer sold!)... so leaving me without a back up storage drive or storage of my photos into the future....

End of Questions: (whew!)

PowerBook, Mac OS X (10.4.11), Apple Chip not Intel chip

A: I mostly disagree with 10.5 being faster, but it will run, & there are things you can do to make it faster than Apple defaults to, but it uses a lot more GPU than 10.4.11 does

A2: No idea why they said that. Not sure you ever mentioned this was a Powerbook though.

A3: All 10.5 Gray Discs are Intel only & model specific for the most part. Not quite sure what your TFF/G3/G4/G5 query is asking.

A4 to A8: Simple solution is to install on an external drive, then boot from & use Migration Assistant to get all your info, Apps, & settings over.

A9: If you need a Laser Printer then Brother has good Tiger support, in fact any printer with Postscript should work, if Ink Jet it's tougher, but if it has PCL then Generic PCL may work There's also GimpPrint to support many printers

A10: You're not forced to get Seagate or Toshiba, I pointed out the case & drive that should be fine for any OSX & even earlier, like OS 8.6

Hi BD Aqua!

Great replies (thanks for wading into my long response to answer so many of my questions!)

RA is Reply to your Answers: (Thanks again!)

RA1: Aha... I thought I'd be getting smaller leaner OS .... Why do I need it? Well I will ONLY find out when I get a new External HDD and manage to store "somewhere" (I can't afford cloud storage), stuff from the HDD 60GB from the Mac as remember I only have between 3-5 GB Free on the Mac's native HDD at any one time....

AND (new problem---needs a new thread) something!! mysterious for a year or more now has been "eating" my available free HDD space. When I first open the computer each day to do work on it---(almost nothing now except photos as no room to do anything!)--- it may start at lets say 10 am with 5.29 Free GB HD space.

I immediately (since I know what's going to happen) turn off all automatic on items such as sticky notes and Printer helpers for the HP printer as its mostly broken anyway so I don't print right now... just 3 items---- so they don't use up valuable HDD space or memory resources... but if I then let the computer just "sit" doing nothing!!! for about 2 hrs.. I'll come back and it is down to 4 or even 3 GB! Free HDD space! I did NOTHING and something is eating up the space...

If I do photos.... I have to work "fast"

If I take too long doing iPhoto, I get "out of memory" and "close computer as HDD is almost "full" " type of warning notices!!! Saying I have down to 190 MB free space!

So that was my worry... something is eating it up... some background process.... I don't understand.. I've had everything there the way its been for years.... something is doing it.

I do have "Norton's" Anti-Virus for protection while I go on web as I share computer with PC so avoiding spreading viruses to other PC's I communicate with via small flash drives for sharing files... It always worked nothing problems... I even had it daily as LOW as 3 GB free but it stayed at 3 GB free.

This is "new" to me.... and puzzling so that was why my comment appeared about being happy it is running faster under Leopard -------if and when I do this transfer....

RA2: Apologies to everyone!

Sorry about not specifying its a PowerBook... thought that everyone always looked at the last line, the "specifications" line in my first posting---- the Apple Community forces you to choose your device and I say there:

(right after last line of my first posting each time).

Thanks again for reading a very very long posting (including the other postings from the other Discussion question as well.
PowerBook, Mac OS X (10.4.11), Apple Chip not Intel chip

RA3
All I was intending to demonstrate, was that somewhere.... for some reason... for over 5 years or more now--- I was always told (due to my having an "Apple Chip" not the "Intel" Chip that I was NEVER EVER allowed to upgrade to Leopard on my PowerBook, as its 1. Impossible!!! , and 2. would cause more problems....

My other relative did not listen to the warnings as they too (earlier than me) ran out of storage space and wanted to use a modern drive that needed Leopard to use it (and other devices too!) and they needed to get the computer up to Leopard----

They had help ... it was years ago...

Apple store or others like that...

My relative's attempt to upgrade to Leopard c.2008? failed miserably.... and it had to be 'downgraded' back to Tiger where it remains ---just like my PowerBook .. to this very day....

Lost all their Email in the process (yes they had a backup... but you--in those years, and today sorry about some people---you know that no one does it "every day" so the Email saved to the computer files----several months worth.. that was removed from the client or servers of the Email as "read"... and not saved.... on computer etc. was all "Lost" forever in the process...family photos sharing back and forth, and other valuable one of a kind stuff like that...

I would certainly make a copy of everything before attempting this.... so its a modern up to the minute full user backup copy....

I think I mentioned it in my other postings---the other relative had exact "twin" of same Apple as the relative who loves Apple wanted to get whole family on to Apples so purchased both at same time same store same day so I know this is a twin of the PowerBook G4 15" Aluminum that other relative had.

BUT that story above only proves again and again why I heard over and over do not install Leopard in this computer .

(I said that over and over but I LIKE your IDEA of external DRIVE!! holding the Leopard so see below).

Anyway----the different "builds" of the 3 PowerBooks.... G3 vs G4 vs G5 and that G4 was split---having half built one way and half built another way----is also what someone told me without saying all the computer jargon of builds to me (I'd understand it but they just wanted to totally discourage me from attempting to do Leopard or wasting their time trying to install it---this was when Leopard was still available as a purchasable disk.. and I don't remember if I got it then, or not....I'm beginning to look to see if I have a grey or black one!

RA4 to RA 8

Sounds very interesting! Running Leopard 10.5 OS from an External HD!

I'd make a whole question/answer session (or copy this over there with your replies) of this one if you want....so I can mark everything as helpful/helped me!

Briefly (if that is possible?) to explain, how does that operate?
Does the Tiger still exist in the HDD of the PowerBook?
Does Tiger start up/boot the PowerBook each time and then it switches over to Leopard in the External Drive?
Or do I switch it back and forth like I do in PC world, in the BIOS? (Does Apple have a BIOS too in Pascal/Apple Chip language?)
How does an External Drive (I can do it on my PC--multiple OS's like Linux, Unix, several versions of Windows) indicate it is the Master Drive and the HDD (small 60 GB ) inside the PowerBook is the slave drive?
Migration Assistant? Is that something that works under Tiger?
If the Migration Assistant works only in Leopard, how do I get it to install and operate if I don't have Leopard working "yet"? to transfer all my files from the PowerBook to the External HDD?

too many questions I know!!

RA9:

GimpPrint site for those who are interested SourceForge http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uac t=8&ved=0CB8QFjAAahUKEwiOueT32fHGAhUJOD4KHcGGB80&url=http%3A%2F%2Fgimp-print.sou rceforge.net%2F&ei=QxqxVc6LAYnw-AHBjZ7oDA&usg=AFQjCNGm0QiM4NLgp8dbaeWCxGXKgRByag &bvm=bv.98476267,d.cWw

They have a huge listing of supported printers.. my old Inkjet HP Office Jet 8500 wireless/8600 upgraded model that only works with Leopard--are both not listed in their list of supported inkjet printers

Sorry, just like no new Apple computer for reasons of expense, there is NO Laser printer in my future----- too expensive... and most of the less expensive ones are Black & White Laser only, no color!! as Inkjet is used for inexpensive color printing...

So I'd like to get a laser and use it for B&W''s in addition to having inkjet.. but I cannot print anymore a lot on the 8500 as its slowly breaking down....
and that is why I need a new printer.... no one uses Tiger anymore (but Brother? I've used them and they're broken down on me----I'm not a heavy user but they are really really junkie constructed and that makes it impossible to keep doing things on it.... I've had a few others have discarded for breaking one or more parts I thought I'd be able to continue using.. no no no can't work it with broken parts so I give up...

Some people love Brother... others hate it.. except for the price which is very reasonable....compared to others

RA10:
YES you did mention and show me these ! I know... I was commenting what I said before that I didn't know what is inside the box.. then I found out it was "Toshiba" which led me to the German review.... which is strange that is the only review on the drive so far....

For me to transfer all my OLD photos and every "new" photo to a drive that is not reviewed by others as to how good it is.... how few bad sectors out of the box.... etc...

.......and to trust that with all the photos and not to lose a whole BUNCH forever and ever to the drive having a "bad sector" "bad block" in its first year or less of use...

That is totally crazy...... so I'm frightened to use unrated, unreviewed ones...

Which leaves me without a good HDD to put inside the great external box you recommended from OWC...

Maybe that explains my words earlier as I know you worked hard!! and found several answers for me... sorry to be stubborn!!! about it!!

(one day I'll afford Solid State Hard Drives---it has its own problems I know----but dying for damaged moving parts and needle taps etc. wear over same areas of the discs, etc.... are all not one of them!)

New Q1: So there never existed an "upgrade" Grey installation disk for Apple for Leopard to upgrade from Tiger (which I still have the original Tiger installation Grey disk) to Leopard? without erasing and reformatting whole HDD??

Thanks for everything BDAqua... I'll start by marking this reply helpful (if not solving it mostly)... still wondering how to get that Black Disk but I got the correct model numbers to look on web for from that other Apple Discussion Thread I quoted earlier.... https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3940381

Jul 23, 2015 12:42 PM in response to Mac_Help

Tiger will still exist on the internal, but you need far more free space on the Internal, as well as backups if your stuff is important.

You could even partition the external & have Tiger & Leopard on it, you can choose which to boot from in Startup Disk CP or holding alt key at bootup.

On the external drive I'd call, chat, or eMail OWC to check on current best solution for PPC Tiger, & to confirm that what I recommended is still currently valid.

Jul 24, 2015 5:40 AM in response to BDAqua

Hi BD Aqua and everyone!

Great answers!

Here are my comments for each of them:

Tiger will still exist on the internal, but you need far more free space on the Internal, as well as backups if your stuff is important.

My original plan (look back a few discussions) was to get /buy/ have working a TIGER compliant External HDD (Two at least--duplicate backups) and instead of having only 10GB free on a 500 GB full drive I'd have more room and I'd transfer whole "topics" off of the old 60 GB internal Hard Drive (which THAT one currently only has 4-5 GB free at any one time) on the PowerBook.... leaving LOTS of room for continuing to operate the computer as Tiger...
But with your idea... I can have it as a Leopard one!

But its the cart before the horse! I need to empty the HDD somewhere else... while I go and make all these installations work.. and make a new copy too... that has to fit somewhere its only 39 GB of data! the rest are the programs that I can't get new product keys for anymore....

I kept the HDD in the Mac lean.... stored 80% of everything on the outside external HDD's

You could even partition the external & have Tiger & Leopard on it, you can choose which to boot from in Startup Disk CP or holding alt key at bootup.

That is great! I LIKE IT!

Easy to do (I'd try the alt key now to see if old OS9 pops up but I think I don't want to end up stuck in a corner---I won't play with anything until I get more help/advice how to do this properly....

On the external drive I'd call, chat, or eMail OWC to check on current best solution for PPC Tiger, & to confirm that what I recommended is still currently valid.

I have to call OWC.. I'm a phone person.. I'll get them when they are in .. tomorrow if I can!! while they are open on a weekday.. weekday minds at work there!!

Meanwhile......... (sorry to drag this on ... tell me when is a good idea to make this a new topci for everyone else who comes after me?)

Here is a potential problem I noticed::

I searched in this old article about searching for the Black Retail disk so I can see today if I can get one on the Internet! (In case I can't find my disk or if its Gray and not Black!) (I have Snow Leopard black disk in white cardboard box! crazy, right?)(picked it up somewhere).

Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753).
If you can't obtain a retail install DVD from Apple, look on eBay or Google the installer part numbers to possibly find at an on-line store. Here's what to look for:
MB427Z/A Leopard 10.5.1 install DVD
MB576Z/A Leopard 10.5.4 install DVD
MB021Z/A Leopard 10.5.6 install DVD (single user)

After you install the base 10.5, download & install the 10.5.8 combo update at http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update

I tried the one above about "system requirements" Apple no longer posts that link!

I tried the link about the Installation and Setup Guide Apple no longer posts that link!

After I install it it is 10.5.0 or 10.5.1 right?

How do I get all the fixes and upgrades??? to 10.5.8?

the link again is in German!! Got to use your translate link on Google as soon as I figure it out...

But what if Apple does not allow "upgrades" anymore on Leopard?

I can't check as I don't have Leopard yet---to check Apple to see if it allows me to download any higher fixes or upgrades to Leopard that were introduced I think it goes to .8??

How high did it go?

What do I do then?? it runs ok I'm certain at 10.5.0 but that's it??

I was too late to do this trick of putting it on an external Hard Drive??

Buying the OSX 10.5 they have different versions..... 10.5.4! 10.5.6!

I assume I want the highest I can put in at once.....10.5.6---open box found on Amazon (don't take it please) (never like buying open box but don't want to do a Ebay one--trust Amazon resellers more).

Speaking of "Trust" first Google got me web sites that just downloaded malware/spyware/adware just for my "clicking" on "Buy Leopard OSX HERE! " Serves me right for thinking I'd get a deal if someone doesn't want theirs anymore!

Q1: Please tell me if its the right "black" disk and I'll buy it today!!

Thank you again!

P.S. Just FYI everyone has an opinion!

I found this while searching.... someone wanted to upgrade their PowerMac to Leopard so someone else wrote back:

You could get one off of CL for around $50, eBay for around $65, or from a friend who might have one for cheap or free.
No matter what, 10.4.x runs the most stable on the G5/G4 systems, I run it and recommend it.

So just to let others here think on this..... its statements like this I've heard all my life about the PowerBook G4 that kept me from trying what you suggest.... but I like the idea I don't put the Leopard inside the PowerBook at all.... and I can go back to Tiger if I encounter any real problems.... and all my data is safe...

A 2007 opinion why "not" to upgrade to Leopard:

(some of these are still true for me today with Tiger---so at the end dual booting is the way to go!)

That looks like the right disc.

* DVD drive for installation

* 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

Classic/OS9 Apps no longer supported.

There are workarounds if the 867MHz CPU is the only hangup...

It appears it's 10.5.6, 10.5.8 is highest.
