If I bring my own wireless router and Apple TV with me while travelling, will I need an internet connection to stream already purchased movies from my ipad to the tv that I will hook up to the Apple TV?

I often travel and have many movies stored on my iPad. I have no issues bringing my own wireless router and Apple TV with me, so I'd like to hook my Apple TV up to the TV, plug in my wireless router, connect my iPad and Apple TV to the network I create, and hopefully stream my movies. That way the whole family isnt crowded around the iPad watching a movie when its raining.

iPad, iOS 5.0.1

The Lightning to HDMI adapter is a nice idea, thank you! I was considering buying the new Apple TV (recent third edition) as I've been reading it supports Bluetooth connections so wifi is not needed. It seems that an internet connection is not needed for this, but the articles are unclear. Ive also been reading about a new "peer-to-peer Airplay" on the new Apple TV that looks promising for the same issue.

Good thought about peer to peer Airplay.

NEver actually tried it.

I'm actually on vacation and have awful internet so currently have a 3 mifi device dangling from an upper bedroom window to try to get signal for the kids to watch Netflix!

I Have an iPhone 6 and AppleTV here but think it's one of my older ones which doesn't support peer to peer AirPlay. If this obviates the internet authentication it would be a great step forward.

If I do get the newer Apple TV, and give it a try, I'll come back and update this thread. I may also just bring my wireless router and try that. Even if I have to plug into the hotels Internet, it'll just be for authentication of purchases. My concern was streaming my movies to my Apple TV that is hooked into the public network, would have so much buffering if the network was busy, that it would be frustrating trying to watch something. I've done this before and it worked great. but the hotel wasn't that busy. I'm heading out for vacation myself tomorrow and plan on kicking back and relaxing. Movies are a part of that for me!

Yeah, it looks as though you will need authentication via internet. If connecting to hotel's network it may require logging in via web page (which ATV doesn't have access to), in which case you would need to contact the provider or get someone at the hotel to help connect.

Use AirPlay to wirelessly stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

With peer-to-peer AirPlay, your iOS device and Apple TV don't have to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

To use peer-to-peer AirPlay, you need one of these devices with iOS 8 or later:

  • iPhone 5 or later
  • iPad mini or iPad (4th generation or later)
  • iPod touch (5th generation or later)

You can stream content to your Apple TV (3rd generation rev A, model A1469 or later) with software version 7.0 or later. Find out which Apple TV model you have.

Make sure that both devices have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.

*If you want to stream iTunes Store content, you also need an Internet connection.*
