Black dead spot appears on Watch Retina Display

Black dead spot suddenly appears on Apple Watch Retina Display with normal use within one week of purchase; third-party tech says caused by forced pressure and not covered by warranty and asks that I buy a new watch (their offer). No unusual pressure or force was ever used on the device. Anyone has similar or same problem?

This happened to me as well, exactly at the same spot, the only difference is that mine keeps growing and growing. By the end of the week I won't be able to use the watch at all if it keeps such a growth rate. Bought it in Berlin, Germany in the only Apple Store and the Genius-bar seems to be too busy to even consider take a look at my watch...

HI Nick.

I hope you still persevered and got an appointment with the Genius Bar. I think if you feel stuck at your desk and helpless, try going online to your country Apple website and click on Support and have them contact you. Explain your aituation and have a few images ready. I think they will help set it up for you and you should get a replacement as soon as you get it reviewed by someone at the Genius Bar. There is a recall happening affecting owners of the MacBookPro wRetina Display going on, and from the buzz I gather since last weekend, that may be a reason for their being more busy than usual. Don't give up. Keep us updated. Wish you all the best!

Hi Mike,

From the feedback I have collated on this problem on this site, MacRumors and Instagram, the best thing to do (as soo as you can), is get it to a Genius Bar at an Apple Store, and call to get an appointment if that works for you. Not sure where you are located, so I am assuming you purchased the Watch at an Apple Store. I think by now, Apple must know there is a potential quality issue with the retina display near that area, or at least, a weakness.

If you are not located near any Apple store, and are concerned about how a third party service provider might deal with this, have your product purchase details with you, and some images (like the above), and contact the Apple Customer Support of your country (via the Apple website) and have them call you back. Try and get them to issue a case ID for you and work from there. It's sometimes easier when the problem is very unique that Apple knows about it first and then select the third party provider nearest to you for you to send the Watch in for review/assessment. All this is not necessary if you have a Genius Bar nearby, or at the same place you bought the Watch. Good luck and let us know if you have had any trouble anywhere...

Regards,

Thanks so much for the replies! Yes, I'm in PEI so no apple store 😟, however, I have booked an appointment at the halifax store for Saturday (Roadtrip!!!), The dot is actually growing, now covers the clock in the upper right.

Looking forward to getting it fixed, love the watch, was mortified when this happened.

Again appreciate the direction. Issue occurred on Tuesday afternoon (in a meeting and someone noticed). Called apple on Wed and booked the appointment.

Cheers, Mike. Glad to know you are on "the Island"! I'd give anything to be there... I'm on another island just one degree north of the Equator and anywhere near NS would be a nice respite from the weather here. Unless the store Genius Bar personnel are familiar with this problem online and elsewhere (we have all got Apple to change it), and it they are doubtful, don't be afraid to contact Apple Customer Service via the Canada website and still engage them on this issue, just so that if the store personnel says it won't be replaced, you already have a case ID with Apple to follow-up on directly with Sacramento (that's where the dudes handling Watch cases are). And if all works out well, you get to fill up a survey and show some love! LOL! All the best.

I am exactly in the same position with you, my warranty ended last month. It just started out of nowhere this morning and getting bigger, everything else is working fine. I could not get an appointment from Genius Bar (no available slots).

I am very curious if they are going to fix/replace it for free or what will be the cost.

Did you bring yours to Genius Bar? Is there any progress? Please let me know, thanks

So I made appointment with the genius bar and came in last week they told me they had to send it to the offsite repair and let the people there figure out the problem. They said that if the people over there can fix it without replacing any parts then it would be free but if they have to replace the screen or something or if they can't fix it they'll replace the whole watch with a better working one (not brand new) which would cost $329 since I have the stainless steel version. It have been 5 days since then and I haven't gotten it back yet.
