Songs keep repeating when I shuffle a playlist

On every iPod and iPhone I've ever owned:

I open a playlist and set it to shuffle. It does. I pause a song, put the device away, and press play a few hours or days later. The device remembers what I've already played so I don't hear the same song twice until I get through all, say, 250 songs on the playlist (unless I select a different playlist, manually select a song on the playlist, or close the iTunes app on my phone). As an illustration, using my iPhone 6 (still on iOS 8.3) last month I spent a week of commuting time, about 45 minutes a day, listening through a playlist and never heard the same song twice.

On my iPhone 6 since updating to iOS 8.4 (12H143):

I open a playlist and set it to shuffle. It does. I pause a song, put the device away, and press play a few hours or days later. It doesn't seem to remember what it's already played, so I end up hearing the same set of about 25-30 songs (with occasional randoms thrown in) every time I pause, put it away, and press play a few hours or days later.

Why doesn't Music seem to remember what it's already played? Is there any way of fixing this, or working around the issue so I don't have to keep hearing the same songs on a playlist?

On a possibly related note, I just connected my phone to my computer, and noticed that several of the songs that keep getting repeated show up in iTunes as having never been played. Has Music/iTunes stopped counting, or is this feature just not working any longer?

iPhone 6, iOS 8.4

I Don't think we are the only ones having this I just think we are the only ones who maybe notice or are the only ones using a specific function that would make us notice... what bother me is apple trying to "fix" something that wasn't broken, it was not perfect but it still works... Now they make this new app and there has been countless problems from it. the shuffle before wasn't great but a least it semi randomized the music so you weren't hearing the same songs. Now you hear the same multiple songs over and over. Like queue was saying when he paused and out it away it wouldn't pick up where it left off (a feature that used to be in the settings menu that is gone) but also I have had it play the same song writhing 5 songs and then again in another 10 songs. And not just one specific song but different songs all with out pausing or stopping and coming back to it but while continuous play. And no I don't have repeat on nor are there multiple different files o the same song in my playlist. I have 26.5 hours of music and there maybe only 4 duplicate songs but those songs are live versions. Anyways I really hope they find a fix for this the whole point of a long playlist is to hear a variety not the same ****...

I have found that when I am currently listening to a playlist, if I re-choose a song to start with the shuffle will play new songs not played when it was repeating the shuffle sequence as noted above. It seems that the song chosen to play first determines the songs that are played. I have been experiencing the same maddening problem as everyone above. However, since selecting a new start song randomly down the playlist, and then selecting the next to invisible song bar at the bottom of the screen, and then ensuring that shuffle is on I have heard new songs that have not been played previously. This is opposite of what I have been doing which is to open the playlist and select the first song. I know that this is not a fix per se, and who knows the same songs might get shuffled with the new starting song as well. It is definitely ridiculous that I have to manipulate the software in order to shuffle a playlist on my iPod when only a month ago the software worked like the dream that was the Apple iPod software.

I used to think that my iPod had creepily connected to my emotions as plenty of times a song would play on shuffle that coincided perfectly with an event or random feeling. This new software is an utter failure. What was once my favorite product and software in my life, has quickly become a point of daily frustration. Apple is the Apple of today because of the iPod and it's software, before its introduction, they were just a company that made odd looking PC's and laptops. I have called customer support for Apple Music and voiced my disgust with the new Apple Music app which now holds the iPod software. Mostly I called to gain an understanding as to whether or not my sentiments were in vain, or if the consensus feedback is that Apple has broken the hearts of its customers and music fans everywhere. It seemed that I was not the only one. I sincerely hope that Apple adds the elements from the previous iPod software to the next update. APPLE FIX THIS APPLICATION! YOU COMPLETELY RUINED A FANTASTIC PRODUCT!

Dear all

I have suddently experienced the same problem for the last days (it was working fine).
While reading all the replies, I think I might have found an easy solution.

* Go to the screen with the current song

* Scroll up in order to display "Up Next"

* Remove the repeat flag (red square on the top right).

Seems to be enough ; at least in my case. No more need to move forward manually.

I hope it can help

Someone already posted sited about this and did not get a response I too have this question

I hadn't seen the original post, but it does indeed sound like we're all having the same problem. I haven't found any fix for it yet.

OK after experiencing the same problem I finally found the solution this morning. Apple has for some reason the reason hidden the repeat and shuffle buttons on the main song play screen. When you select the now playing song at the bottom of the screen then you have to scroll up to see the hidden buttons that are in red. You have to uncheck the repeat button so that the red highlight goes away. This will fix your problem.

Repeat is turned off, and it's not the problem. The issue that I, Sparky87, and MichaelNW are all having isn't that the playlist repeats itself once it's cycled through all of the songs on the list; it's that we are hearing a few songs from that list repeatedly before it's played through every other song.

OK here's my latest update, as I've stated I have 26.5 hours of music that I shuffle in my playlist. I don't hit repeat as I like to let the playlist end and start fresh with a new random order all while never hearing any song twice. Now that was the set up I had before the new music app. Now my playlist cam to its end on its shuffle, however the current rotation necer played some songs and as well repeated many sings more than once! Seriously this is a problem Apple, and you need to fix it!

Wow. You forget to check in on a thread for almost a year....

I'm thrilled to be still having the same exact problem a year later (my iPhone 6 is currently updated to 9.3.2 [13F69]). And what's really exciting is that now the Music app comes with the helpful ability to reorder songs in the upcoming queue, which is especially great because it finally provides some visual evidence of the shuffle problem:

User uploaded file

As a note, I started off this playlist by clicking shuffle. I haven't hit pause, or clicked around, or selected a new track, or done anything else to interfere with the queue except to open it up and look at it. I just listened to "Killing Time" two songs ago, and it's coming up again four songs from now. It's a great song, but I JUST listened to it. (This isn't actually the worst it's ever been. A few weeks ago I was on a long car trip and I had the same song play three times in a row, and was queued up to play again two songs later.)

I have a friend who works in Apple tech support, who gave me the usual "erase and clean install." It didn't work. Is there any hope at this point of getting through to Apple in a way that will actually resolve the problem--especially now that we can visually document it?

I can't be bothered to ring support and have them tell me to do a clean install etc (which I've already done twice) .... so I emailed big T Cook directly - the rest of you should too if you have ongoing issues that aren't being resolved.

Hi Tim,

Hope you, or whoever is reading/deleting this on your behalf, are well and having a good run-up to xmas and new year.

I wanted to email directly as I've have little faith in reporting bugs and issues via the normal channels - beta program, customer support, Apple community support pages etc

Nigh-on 6 months after full release, Apple Music is still awful. I use it every day and every day I want to launch my 6s from a window (but I don't because I love it nearly as much as my son).

I used to have a dev account and have tested the betas of iOS and OS X for a number of years now. More recently, I've also been part of the public beta program. I've spent considerable time logging bugs and issues and then following up with requested logs etc. But of pretty much all the things I've reported, the issues still exist. Your testing team have at times been great, but at other times come back with "we can't replicate this". This is majorly frustrating when, if you look at the Apple forums, you'll see loads of people suffering the same issues. I'd happily take a phone call from someone at Apple to walk through an replicate the issue(s), but with a full time job, 2 websites and a podcast to do, I don't really have the time to be running test, gathering logs, getting them and sending them off to Apple - as much as I want to help!

Here's an example of an issue I've reported numerous times, loads of other people have issues with, yet your devs/UATs "cannot replicate" the problem: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7143716?answerId=29447907022#29447907022

Fundamental issues that still exist in Music.app include:

- Shuffle still selects a sub-set of tracks each time. +5 days of music in My Music, yet I hear the same tracks every day!

- SO MANY mismatched tracks in iCloud Music Library (the matching criteria you're using is AWFUL - even tracks clearly marked as 'live' or 'remix' and with completely different album name/info are matched to album versions. Terrible!

- Overridden/wrong album art (linked to above)

- Numerous tracks from my Mac in iCloud Music Library skip and won't play on other devices

- Differently matched tracks when playing on different devices

- Items won't delete from My Music and when they eventually do, the shuffled My Music list replays everything I've heard instead of carrying on through the list

- Still no notifications for live/replayed shows in Radio/Connect. I live in Finland - most of the shows I enjoy are on too late for me to listen to live and I don't remember to then go in to the app searching for them every week or so (which is still an awful process).

I really love Apple. My apartment is FULL of Apple products. But, at the moment, I'm really regretting leaving Spotify and paying for Apple Music every month. I really do hope you can get these issues resolved and make this the product that it could and SHOULD be!

Cheers,

Steve

Edit - Okay I just took a good look at my playlist and now I feel like somewhat of an idiot, because it turns out that somehow nearly all of the 2000 songs in the playlist became unchecked except for these 50 or so. In my defense, there's no way that this was user error; it was fine until the AM update. Hopefully others' might have the same simple solution.

That is really strange. But in my case, all of the songs on the playlist are still checked. Still can't figure out why shuffle is misbehaving, or how to fix it.

Ya all of my songs are checked off too... The only thing I can figure out is in settings there used to be an option to turn on or off "continue playback where left off" that option is still under the video settings but looks to be removed from music. Thats the only reason I can see for it misbehaving like this. What bothers me is that because not many people are talking about this problem it probably won't be fixed by apple.

Well it looks like there is a new update, but it so far doesn't appear to have fixed the issue we all are having... Nice ti see apple focus solely on the popular problems and not ALL of them! Just because there isn't that many of us complaining about it they don't seem it a real issue. Thanks for noticing apple.
