Songs keep repeating when I shuffle a playlist

On every iPod and iPhone I've ever owned:

I open a playlist and set it to shuffle. It does. I pause a song, put the device away, and press play a few hours or days later. The device remembers what I've already played so I don't hear the same song twice until I get through all, say, 250 songs on the playlist (unless I select a different playlist, manually select a song on the playlist, or close the iTunes app on my phone). As an illustration, using my iPhone 6 (still on iOS 8.3) last month I spent a week of commuting time, about 45 minutes a day, listening through a playlist and never heard the same song twice.

On my iPhone 6 since updating to iOS 8.4 (12H143):

I open a playlist and set it to shuffle. It does. I pause a song, put the device away, and press play a few hours or days later. It doesn't seem to remember what it's already played, so I end up hearing the same set of about 25-30 songs (with occasional randoms thrown in) every time I pause, put it away, and press play a few hours or days later.

Why doesn't Music seem to remember what it's already played? Is there any way of fixing this, or working around the issue so I don't have to keep hearing the same songs on a playlist?

On a possibly related note, I just connected my phone to my computer, and noticed that several of the songs that keep getting repeated show up in iTunes as having never been played. Has Music/iTunes stopped counting, or is this feature just not working any longer?

I think I've figured out an alternate option. I have over 2,500 songs on my phone and seeing the same ones in the queue after I've purposely skipped them is maddening! After reading several of these comments I went into the Songs folder. In the top right-hand corner there's a red "Sort" option. I noticed that mine was sorting songs by Artist rather than Song Title. I switched it and now I'm seeing new songs! Literally just did it though so only time will tell if that's the issue we've all been encountering.

Edit - Okay I just took a good look at my playlist and now I feel like somewhat of an idiot, because it turns out that somehow nearly all of the 2000 songs in the playlist became unchecked except for these 50 or so. In my defense, there's no way that this was user error; it was fine until the AM update. Hopefully others' might have the same simple solution.

That is really strange. But in my case, all of the songs on the playlist are still checked. Still can't figure out why shuffle is misbehaving, or how to fix it.

Ya all of my songs are checked off too... The only thing I can figure out is in settings there used to be an option to turn on or off "continue playback where left off" that option is still under the video settings but looks to be removed from music. Thats the only reason I can see for it misbehaving like this. What bothers me is that because not many people are talking about this problem it probably won't be fixed by apple.

I have found that when I am currently listening to a playlist, if I re-choose a song to start with the shuffle will play new songs not played when it was repeating the shuffle sequence as noted above. It seems that the song chosen to play first determines the songs that are played. I have been experiencing the same maddening problem as everyone above. However, since selecting a new start song randomly down the playlist, and then selecting the next to invisible song bar at the bottom of the screen, and then ensuring that shuffle is on I have heard new songs that have not been played previously. This is opposite of what I have been doing which is to open the playlist and select the first song. I know that this is not a fix per se, and who knows the same songs might get shuffled with the new starting song as well. It is definitely ridiculous that I have to manipulate the software in order to shuffle a playlist on my iPod when only a month ago the software worked like the dream that was the Apple iPod software.

I used to think that my iPod had creepily connected to my emotions as plenty of times a song would play on shuffle that coincided perfectly with an event or random feeling. This new software is an utter failure. What was once my favorite product and software in my life, has quickly become a point of daily frustration. Apple is the Apple of today because of the iPod and it's software, before its introduction, they were just a company that made odd looking PC's and laptops. I have called customer support for Apple Music and voiced my disgust with the new Apple Music app which now holds the iPod software. Mostly I called to gain an understanding as to whether or not my sentiments were in vain, or if the consensus feedback is that Apple has broken the hearts of its customers and music fans everywhere. It seemed that I was not the only one. I sincerely hope that Apple adds the elements from the previous iPod software to the next update. APPLE FIX THIS APPLICATION! YOU COMPLETELY RUINED A FANTASTIC PRODUCT!

OK here's my latest update, as I've stated I have 26.5 hours of music that I shuffle in my playlist. I don't hit repeat as I like to let the playlist end and start fresh with a new random order all while never hearing any song twice. Now that was the set up I had before the new music app. Now my playlist cam to its end on its shuffle, however the current rotation necer played some songs and as well repeated many sings more than once! Seriously this is a problem Apple, and you need to fix it!

Experiencing this same issue. Have tried toggling restart, toggling REPEAT on / off. Nothing seems to work. Oddest thing about all of it is that the song replays at totally random intervals. It just restarts right in the middle of a track. Thus far my user experience with the relatively new Apple Music has been a real bummer. So unintuitive and buggy.

This is still an issue. I've actually gone to either Shuffling ALL music because it makes repeats less likely or just playing albums/playlists front to back because Shuffle is so broken. I accidentally left Shuffle on today when listening to an album. I pulled up the "Previous/Next" list and it had songs on the album both as played and upcoming, even though Repeat was not on.

I hope Apple fixes Shuffle.

I’m having the same problem and haven’t found any solutions, I hope more people will post on here to get recognition so Apple can stop making the music section so horrible. Literally every update worsens the music and makes it less enjoyable, I wish they’d leave it alone for once and keep it the way it was. If it isn’t broken, don’t try and fix it...

As far as I can tell, there are two problems.

The first is that when shuffling, whether it's all music or a playlist, the Shuffle seems to lose its place and circle back to an early point, playing songs you've already heard in an order you've already heard.

The second is that Shuffle doesn't seem to care what's already been played at all. I Shuffled all Local H music and songs I'd already heard kept popping back up, as if Shuffle chose every single next song at random and didn't take note of what was already heard. It may be more random, but true Shuffle, like in cards, doesn't repeat. It orders things randomly and then plays them consecutively without repeating them.

Jarathen you are totally right that's a great summation of our problems. However there's a third problem with this which you didn't mention and isn't really related to shuffle. It's the fact that the music doesn't pick up from where you last left off. So if you pause and walk away for say 5 hours and come back it'll restart the song and start a new rotation of the shuffle instead of continuing the song and shuffle list where it last was. So unless you're listening to music non stop your playlist will at some point get reswapped
