Songs keep repeating when I shuffle a playlist

On every iPod and iPhone I've ever owned:

I open a playlist and set it to shuffle. It does. I pause a song, put the device away, and press play a few hours or days later. The device remembers what I've already played so I don't hear the same song twice until I get through all, say, 250 songs on the playlist (unless I select a different playlist, manually select a song on the playlist, or close the iTunes app on my phone). As an illustration, using my iPhone 6 (still on iOS 8.3) last month I spent a week of commuting time, about 45 minutes a day, listening through a playlist and never heard the same song twice.

On my iPhone 6 since updating to iOS 8.4 (12H143):

I open a playlist and set it to shuffle. It does. I pause a song, put the device away, and press play a few hours or days later. It doesn't seem to remember what it's already played, so I end up hearing the same set of about 25-30 songs (with occasional randoms thrown in) every time I pause, put it away, and press play a few hours or days later.

Why doesn't Music seem to remember what it's already played? Is there any way of fixing this, or working around the issue so I don't have to keep hearing the same songs on a playlist?

On a possibly related note, I just connected my phone to my computer, and noticed that several of the songs that keep getting repeated show up in iTunes as having never been played. Has Music/iTunes stopped counting, or is this feature just not working any longer?

Since updating to iOS 9 on my iPad I have yet to notice these problems. I've even hit pause, come back the next day and started the song up where I left off like I used to be able to. Also haven't had any repeats that I have noticed, and this is spanning two 8 hour shifts at work. So in 16 hours of nonstop I haven't had it repeat, where as before it would almost every hour or more

here is my theory. I have an existing playlist that i recently added songs to. I've noticed that when i shuffle the revised play list it will play the new songs added more often and often repeat it right after it played the song. I'm thinking it has to do with the internal count of how many times each song is played in the list when it is on shuffle. (so itunes knows which songs it has played in the list when it is on shuffle) Since the new songs have the fewer number of plays, itunes is trying to catch those songs up to the number of times the original list of songs have played. (ie Songs A-H have played 10 times, songs I-Z have only played 5 times so it is playing songs I-Z more times to catch up to A-H songs play count). Just a theory but it sounds logical.

This morning since the 9.1 update my playlist kept playing the same song over and over. When I would forward manually to another it would not be the next song in my playlist, just a shuffled one from the list. Then it would play that over and over until I changed it. I have tried to hit shuffle and nothing happens and there is no Repeat button I can see to uncheck. How can I just play my playlist IN ORDER from beginning to end? Any ideas would be much appreciated. I am sure there is something basic I am not seeing....

I think I may have found a solution. Not 100% sure though. Will need to experiment a bit more during the week.

I have the same 'random repeat while in Shuffle mode' problem, but it appears to be isolated to songs which I am streaming.

Any playlists which I've downloaded for offline listening seem to play all the way through before repeating.

Maybe it's a limitation in the size of the streaming buffer, or how much RAM has been allocated for the stream each time we listen to music.

Add me to someone who has been INSANELY frustrated by this issue and the lack of even understanding this issue from Apple let alone fixing it. This is a basic music function that my first 2004 iPod was able to handle. It has gotten so frustrating that I am considering breaking out my old iPod touch or even just buy another brand's portable MP3 player (do they even still make them?) in order to properly shuffle and randomize music.

TThe next queston have for everyone is this, has anyone actually filed a formal complaint about this? Maybe it's one of those things where the company is like "well no one is complaining about it, maybe we leave it and no one will notice" and they never actually fix the problem. Sure we are complaining here, but what is the likely hood of them even reading these forums?

I've noticed with each update something gets altered. After the iOS 9.0.1 update I was still able to shuffle and pick up from where I left off without any songs repeating. But, I had a gut feeling that wouldn't last long. Not to mention I was already angry when the __of__ went missing. For example I have 1526 songs and I was able to see while shuffling 25 of 1526 at the top of the screen. It's how I knew when my shuffle was coming to an end and about to start all over. Now that it's gone I can no longer tell. Ever since this whole Apple Music crap things have been crappy. I drove myself crazy with the album art issue. I'm just happy that turned out to a not too bad fix. I attribute that to the fact that I didn't indulge in Apple Music and I never bothered with iTunes Match. Like many in these forums I'm very particular about my music. Now that I've updated to 9.0.2 the shuffling of music has been altered again. Grrrrrrr! I'm so annoyed. @Sparky87: I agree with you about contacting Apple, the only reason I haven't is I'm tired of being told to restore, reset or wipe device clean and start all over when I know there has to be a simpler fix. I guess I'll have to suck it up and make the call. I'll be sure to update the outcome to keep all of you posted. In the event I find a fix on my own I will definitely share it here. Thanks for hearing me out.

I am glad I am not alone, this has been driving me nuts since this summer!! All my songs are stored on my iPhone. 1 of my playlist has just over 1000 songs and I am maybe at best 20 percent through it. I checked the number of plays and I have several songs that have played 5 times and a bunch have played 3 times while most have never played. I should be able to listen for 3.2 days without repeating and I have repeats within 3 hours. This is music play 101 that seems to have Apple tripped up. This is just plain embarrassing that this has been going on for months and they can't seem to fix it. What a joke!!!!

Same issue and I reported this a number of times during beta testing, only to be told they couldn't replicate the problem.

I have a few thousand tracks in iCloud Library, but still hear a certain number (quite a few) of the same ones every single day, whereas there are others I won't hear for months on end.

I also get this issue when I remove a track from My Music/iCloud Library while in shuffle mode. The app will "re-shuffle" but essentially just goes back to the start of the same "shuffled" list but with a few other random tracks thrown in - so I have to listen all the same songs all over again.
