downloaded files take up way to much space. anyway to change?

I am actually enjoying Apple Music overall. Some bugs now and then but overall it's nice (and I love just asking Siri to play a song and it happens).

But I'm probably not going to keep it because the downloaded music takes up too much space.

For the last 6 years+ I've been using Rhapsody. For their current iPhone app I can set the app to download a lower quality (thus, smaller) song file. I've got hundreds more files in Rhapsody currently and it's sitting around 6GB on my phone. My Apple Music app is at 14GB.

Now, I've got a 64GB phone, but I've also got a bunch of other stuff on there and don't have the room to take 32GB up with music (if I downloaded everything I have in Rhapsody to Apple Music).

Am I missing something? Anyone else seeing this issue?

No, there is not a way to reduce the file size (or bit rate) for Apple Music tracks. However, I have found the size to be much of an issue. Average file size of downloaded files appears to run between 7 and 12 MB. It will vary considerably from file to file.

Storage space will be a constraint on any device. Personally, I prefer a better quality to quantity.

It's not just the downloaded songs that fill your available space, but streamed ones as well. I haven't marked any songs to download for offline use, but just 10 days of streaming music filled up my last 2GB of available space, presumable with Apple Music cache. I cleared the cache by erasing my iPhone and restoring it from a backup, which freed up 2GB of space, and stopped using Apple Music for a while. As soon as I started streaming Apple Music again, it started using up my available space until I was back down to 0MB again.
