iOS 7 update on iPhone not working

I have an iPhone 4. I have tried to update IOS 7 through my Mac and iTunes. I kep getting almost to the end and an "Unknown Error has occurred" message. My phone is now locked and unusable.

Please help!

The exact message is....

The iPhone "iPhone" could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (6).

i don't think that the iphone 4 can be updated to the iOS 8

It is now saying restore to factory settings.
