I've tried backup recovery but for some reason cant turn message backup on, so thats out. Don't really want to spend money on third party app. Is there any thing in IOS 8.4 on an IPhone 5S that can recover deleted text/ message thread? ( years of text with my wife)

no i don't think there is..try to do it on your computer with itunes
iCloud or iTunes backup are the only recourses I know without aid of a third party app.
For itunes
1. Connect your iPhone to the PC with which you sync it.
2. Launch iTunes.
3. Go to the top right-hand corner and select your iPhone.
4. Now choose ‘Restore backup’.
5. Wait for a few minutes, and all the data you previously backed up will now replace the data on your phone. (so you will lose data added to the phone since the last backup.)
can't figure out where it is in Itunes. This really *****. I let a friend use it for a second....I know it's in the phone and can't understand why apple wouldn't make this more accessible. $60 bucks for a third party app.

Go to iTunes with your phone connected by usb cable. Select your device from the icons at the top left. It will be the last one of the group of icons. Then summary tab. The tabs are in the top center. Summary is the far left option of those. Second group down is a button for restore.
The best way to restore deleted text message thread is backing up your iPhone to iTunes or iCloud. After you deleted text message, you only need to restore your iPhone with the backup files. That means you can extract the backup file to get all your previous data without any third party easy iPhone recovery app.
