Partitions sizes not reported correctly after removing Bootcamp

Hi,

I am reading through all these threads and am hoping that @Loner T can help (or anyone, but he seems to have a good understanding of this). I did the dumb thing and uninstalled bootcamp using disk utility and now have the dreaded split HD in two partitions. I want to reinstall bootcamp but when I try to make a third partition for a Bootcamp HD it takes up all the free space on my HD. Not to mention that the reported space available in Disk Utility, doesn't match the "Get Info" amount on the Macintosh HD. I am including screen shots and will send the cs list and list in hopes you can help me. I have a time machine backup so I don't mind formatting (again), and I have a WinClone image of the old Win7 (but it was crashing hence the removal in the first place). Thanks for any help!

You have a 3TB internal disk. This disk has to be modified in a specific partition scheme for it to allow BC/Windows installation. In your output, you have a 2.2TB and 800GB chunk. There is no simple method of merging these two chunks into a single chunk that would allow BCA to repartition the disk.

I would recommend disconnecting all external storage before you make the next attempt at Windows installation.

Unless you wish to learn esoteric disk manipulation using diskutil commands, the simplest and safest solution is

1. Back up OSX using Time Machine - Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.

2. Boot into Internet Recovery - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support.

3. Erase your entire internal drive and restore from the TM backup in Step 1 - OS X Yosemite: Recover your entire system.

Please be aware that TM does not backup Bootcamp partitions.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I am sorry, I should have mentioned that I did already do a format and recovered from Time Machine. And I still can't get the partition numbers to work out for a full 3TB. After posting this last night, I tried to make a third partition just to see what it would do, and it worked and the third partition took up the entirety of the free space, even though I only set it to take 200gb. What's weird is that after the 3rd partition, the free space in that third partition was nearly 1tb (the missing space?). So, thinking I had recovered the missing space, I deleted the third partition, only to find it back to being the scant 319 or so gb available again.

I am not afraid to use terminal and diskutil commands. I really appreciate your time.

It can be corrected. Can you post the latest diskutil cs list? Boot into Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R - with the spinning globe) and I can provide commands based on the latest diskutil cs list output.

I rebooted into recovery but was unable to find a way to access terminal command line so I rebooted normally and here is the cs list: (I had to doit as a text file since I kept getting "invalid characters" when posting as text so any help on how to post as text will also be very appreciated 🙂

The 'invalid text' is an issue with the ASC. I have had similar issues. It is not very consistent. Here is a text version.

Sorry to sound dumb, but how to I enter terminal commands in Recovery Mode? My only options are System Restore via Time Machine, ReInstall, Disk Utility, or Help Site. When I ran disk utility in Recovery mode, I saw no way to get to "Terminal" to enter anything.

Sir, I can't thank you enough!!! The HD is back to full 3tb and with only one partition. Time Machine backup is running smoothly and all is right with my mac world. One more question, I want to put Win7 back on a boot camp partition. I have a winclone image i made of my old bootcamp. Do you suggest making the partition with Disk Utility or Bootcamp Assistant? In BA I can't seem to get past the part of needing a DVD of the OS (which I have, but I have only an external DVD drive and for some reason it's not being seen in the setup process).

You can restore Winclone back to the Fusion drive, but you need to ensure that the partitioning on the HDD part is within the first two TB, otherwise Winclone restore will fail (the MBR is restricted to 4 partitions and 2TB, both). A successful restore is it's own reward. You donate to the authors by the two tools used GPT Fdisk and Testdisk using Google Search and finding their respective donation links. Last time I posted them here, there was an objection. (Full disclosure - I am not affiliated to either author). Make sure you back up both OSes to appropriately formatted external disks as a baseline for future restore.

According to the link "OS X 10.8.3: Fusion drives and standard 3TB drives should use Boot Camp Assistant rather than Disk Utility to create the Boot Camp partition"

That quote has me worried, as when I tried to start BA I got an error that I could not partition the drive.

How do I ensure that the partition is within the first 2 TB using DU?

I tried but that but BA gave me this error:

The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.

The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.
