Trackpad very slow and unresponsive on C2D MBP

I love my new Mac (well worth the wait), but it consistently gets hung up. The mouse does not turn into the spinning beachball of death, but rather, just sits there for a little while and does not respond to input from the trackpad. Has anyone else been having this problem (Rev A or Rev B MPBs)? Ideas on how to solve it?
I wouldn't post on this except for one thing: it is incredibly annoying and can really put a hold on everything happening on my laptop until it decides to start working again. Thoughts?

Cheers,

so it freezes completly for a short bit then resumes working again? That's strange. If it was a hardware fault, I would stay it freezes and that's the end of the story.

But if it freezes and comes back, it means that the processor choked while trying to do something and only started working back when it was done finishing such choking task.

I'm not sure how can this be tackled but maybe if you can try to force-quit when it freezes and see if that helps? Does the caps lock light come on & off when you press the caps lock during that time?

Last but not least, I've learned my lesson the hard day since my early days with a Mac. That lesson is never to continue using the pre-installed image of the OS. I usually boot from the included OS CD, format the drive and partition it if necessary or needed, and fresh install the OS. Maybe it's just my bad luck but that's what I always do.

Best of luck dude.

Try a PRAM zapping...............

MacBook, MacBook Pro: Cursor reacts unexpectedly

Does the cursor on your Mac notebook move while you're typing? Do you notice that sometimes the cursor arrow doesn't appear when you use the trackpad, or you touch the edge of the trackpad and the cursor doesn't move?

I have the same issue with my C2D MBP. If I read you correctly. The computer doesn't freeze, gifs keep playing, music keeps going, menumeters change, but the cursor stays stuck, but after a few seconds it comes loose. And I do have "ignore accidental trackpad input" checked as well.

And no, I'm not sweaty or oily, and during one freeze I was only touching the macbook at all with my index finger on the trackpad, nothing on the arm-rests.

I really don't want to have to send it back 😟

I think I may have found a "lead". The problem went away for a while after Onyxing it, and didn't appear at all in XP as far as I could tell. However, I just had a relapse, BUT I found a pattern. I had a finder window open and had just used the keyboard to highlight a folder (ie. pressing g to highlight my games-folder). So I tried it again, press key on keyboard while circling with the trackpad, and it froze maybe five to ten times just after I pushed the keys. But didn't freeze when I didn't push any keys. But then it acted perfectly, even when I pushed keys. Then after a while I got the same "cycle" with the cursor stopping when the key is pressed.

Odd indeed, but at least this feels more software oriented to me now.

Thanks everyone for your posts. Allow me to clarify a few things, as I may not have made the issue as clear as I should have:
The trackpad, at times, is simply unresponsive. For example, I was checking a widget, then went to move the mouse and it had disappeared. Further, it came back after 1-2 seconds, but would not move. finally after maybe 3-4 seconds it became responsive again. I zapped the PRAM, that did nothing. Have not yet run Onyx or cocktail, but I am looking to see if anyone has an ideas as what might be the cause (other than simply, "it's a bug"), if possible. Thanks again for all of your help.
Oh, and it is not accidental trackpad input or anything like that. This is something that happens often and with somewhat predictable consistency.

Thanks again,
Macinator

I can't reliably replicate the problem, but I do have this:
I was doing a sudoku on websudokudotcom and every so often, after I clicked in a box (trackpad) and entered the number (keyboard), the mouse would disappear. I would have to move my finger around the trackpad, wait for it to show up, then wait a bit longer until it was able to move again. Very frustrating when I was on a roll! Does this simplify it a bit? As a side note, I did keep an eye on Act.Mon, and nothing really showed up. Once, during a mouse hang Safari went up to 22% CPU, but quickly went back down. Other than that, it was typically in the range of 4-7%. No other noticeable spikes in CPU were noted.

Hmmm. I'm not sure what to suggest other than some more experimentation to isolate the problem. Does the problem occur in all programs or just one? Has it ever occurred in the Finder?

Have you tried using a mouse instead? Does the problem exist when you use a mouse? If you haven't tried that, I would say hook up a mouse and use it instead of the trackpad for a few days. If the problem fails to manifest itself, you will have isolated it to some anomalous trackpad problem. If that is the case, I would contact Apple to have the computer serviced.

A bit of a breakthrough:
I have found that with some reliability (~50%) selecting all of the items on my dtop will cause the mouse to freeze. If I hit cmd-a and then try to move the mouse, about half of the time it will just site for a second or two. Not as bad as the Sudoku example I gave before, but still something worth noting. I do not have a regular mouse on hand, but I will see if I can borrow a friend's tomorrow and give it a shot. Thanks all.

Oh and I should add this: I am in no mood to send this thing back. I am a student and I need a decent laptop - the main reason why I have used exclusively Apple products for the vast majority of my life. If that's what I have to do, I will do it begrudgingly and when winter break rolls around. Turn around time on this repair (again, if it needs that) had better be minimal.
