Trackpad very slow and unresponsive on C2D MBP

I love my new Mac (well worth the wait), but it consistently gets hung up. The mouse does not turn into the spinning beachball of death, but rather, just sits there for a little while and does not respond to input from the trackpad. Has anyone else been having this problem (Rev A or Rev B MPBs)? Ideas on how to solve it?
I wouldn't post on this except for one thing: it is incredibly annoying and can really put a hold on everything happening on my laptop until it decides to start working again. Thoughts?

Cheers,

MacBook Pro C2D 2.33GHz 2GB RAm, etc., Mac OS X (10.4.8), The wait is over!

I seem to have varying degrees of success duplicating the bug. However, one thing that works one minute won't work the second time around. Yesterday I could get it to hang if I clicked on a menu in Safari and used the keyboard to select a menu-item. It locked up every time, for about a minute, then it acted normal. Then I tried it again later and it hung, then I couldn't get it to hang. I've zapped the PRAM now, I'll be doing an archive and install later tonight if it hangs again. If it still hangs, full erase and restore tomorrow, and after that I'm calling apple.

Oh, and Stefan, was that a C2D MBP? If so I'm going to tell Apple that and request a new machine instead of a replaced trackpad.

To me it seems like it's either software, or something weird with the logic board/input controller, like it gets confused when receiving input from both at the same time, and if so, switching the pad obviously isn't going to help.

Still remained, I managed to get it to freeze by pressing two keys on the keyboard while browsing a safari page and moving the mouse, as well as highlighting menu items in the menus again. As well as when pressing command+n to open a new Mail window.

I haven't been able to replicate it in the installer though, which I guess is a plus.

Unfortunately, I didn't get an option as to whether I wanted to archive and install or erase, or just upgrade, so I'm not sure what installation I'm doing right now 😝 So if it works, I'm still going to do an erase and install either way to get a fresh system.

I made a video showcasing the bug as it exists on my system:
www.budayeen.com/trackglitch.mov

Once again, when I say mouse, I mean cursor 😝

Naturally it doesn't just show up in the menus (or in just safari), as that would have been an insignificant problem, but it seems this is the most reliable way to duplicate it for me. It still doesn't work every time though. And I haven't been able to do it with a mouse.

And the reinstall didn't do any good (obviously), but more importantly, I managed to duplicate it in the Mac OS X installer a few times. Which I guess would indicate that it's a hardware problem since that software runs off the DVD.

Just for the **** of it I'm going to do a proper erase and install on the whole thing, but I doubt it'll make any difference.

Could anyone with a "healthy" MBP C2D try to replicate it?

Don't erase and install, I did that last night and nothing became of it (except that my AirPort card would no longer power on and I had to call Apple for 40 minutes about that matter).
I watched your video an my MBP does the exact same thing to the t (or should I say "a and f"). I also have found that applying an effect to a photo in iPhoto, then hitting cmd-z made the mouse stick.
Also of interest, I can click with the mouse while it is stuck, I just can't move it. Not that it makes things any more helpful, but I thought i would throw it in there if this aids anyone in developing a theory.

Hehe, too late, already did. Though I didn't have too much on it anyway. I'll just have to replay a few levels of HL2 and copy over some files from my G5 again, no biggie.

But I'm about to call it quits on this one, and I'll be calling Apple on Monday to get a replacement MBP. Anyone know if they have a policy on replacements vs repairs? I mean, it ought to be cheaper for them to just send a replacement and send mine to someone else than potentially have to pick mine up several times.

I didn't think it was a huge problem at first, but somehow it seems it's gotten more frequent now, and this is the only computer I'll be affording for the next five or six years, so unless it's fricking tip top I won't keep it.

Now if only I can send it away so that I'll get a return before my girlfriend gets here, she'd give me **** if my "$2000 toy" was broken from the get go 😝 I'm quite content with the crap I've gottne just for buying a Mac.

Has anyone else been having troubles with their network connections? For the second time in 2 days my ethernet stopped working on startup. I had to shutdown, remove the battery and clear all power, then reboot in safe mode, then reboot again for Ethernet to be even an option again in System Prefs. If no one else is having this problem, Ill repost somewhere else, but I'm curious to see if other users with troublesome trackpads have this too. Thanks.

I am experiencing this exact issue with my new C2D 15" MBP (2.16 stock). I didn't notice the problem until after I installed Microsoft Office 2004. This has been the only software addition since taking receipt of the computer. Perhaps this was just a coincidence but I was curious to find out if those experiencing the cursor freeze have Office installed?

The cursor freeze problem was most noticeable to me while using Safari and iTunes. I was also experiencing hang-ups while scrolling with the remote in the Front Row software as well.

I did notice some improvement after booting from the installation disc 1 and performing "repair disc permissions" included with the disc utility software. I have only experienced one cursor freeze today but this should not be happening at all on a brand new computer.

I hadn't installed Office on any of the three installations that I got it to freeze in, so I don't think that's the culprit. I'd agree about it happening often in safari, but I think that might just be because it's the app I spend the most time in, since it has happened in other apps as well.

And as I said before, when the error is there during the install-process, with no applications yet installed, I don't think it's to do with any specific app.
