Bootcamp and windows 10 - have you upgraded?

Windows 10 is out today. I cannot find a thread on this yet . . . now that Windows 10 is out, has anyone using bootcamp tried the upgrade? If so, results or advice?

My Windows is still waiting for the download.

I updated to Windows 10 yesterday on my Bootcamp drive. I have a Mac Pro (Late 2013) with the AMD FirePro D500

The upgrade was seamless apart from the fact that the AMD FirePro drivers are not supported in Windows 10 so it uses the basic windows drivers instead. It is not possible to get Windows 10 to install / recognise / use the drivers with the current version of Bootcamp.

Until Apple release an updated set of drivers with a new version of Bootcamp I would advise any Mac Pro (Late 2013) user to not update to Windows 10.

Thankfully as I did an upgrade instead of a clean install I could revert back to Windows 8.1 and get on with playing games which only run on Windows whilst I keep the serious stuff for OS X

Worked! 🙂

So I have iMac MD094 (2,9 Ghz, 8Gb, 1Tb HDD and 500 GB Samsung SSD EVO 850 which is used as system disk for both Mac OS X and Windows with 2 partitions)

So this is my working pattern to upgrade your Windows 8.1 or 7:

1. Reserve your copy

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-upgrade

2. Wait until notification about Windows 10 upgrade and install Windows 10.

If you do not want to wait follow these steps:

a) Delete all files and folders here C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

b) open Windows Update window from Control Panel

c) run command "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" to force upgrade through WUA (Windows Update Agent)

d) after executing command you will see how Windows 10 is being downloaded in the Windows Update window.

e) you will be asked to install Windows 10, computer will reboot many times during installation

3. Go to Mac OS, open Bootcamp Assistant, choose only one item to download support software, specify flash drive as location

4. Go to Windows, go to flash drive, go to BootCamp folder, run setup.exe, bootcamp will be updated.

5. All works fine, keyboard and mouse are fully supported in Windows 10!

6. Go to NVidia Control Center, install driver for Windows 10

7. Enjoy! 🙂

Had the "reservation" using Windows 7 on Bootcamp (mid-2011 iMac), the files actually downloaded on the afternoon of the 28th. But never got the "notification" that it was "ready". Found a link in a Windows forum to use the Microsoft Update Assistant (or something like that). Took about an hour and everything installed perfectly.

Only "issues" so far:

(1) Apple Magic Mouse - though it is listed in devices does not seem to work (but have a Logitech wireless mouse that works perfectly and I was using it for Windows 7 and 8.1 anyway)

(2) Apple bluetooth keyboard works fine EXCEPT all the Function Keys (brightness, volume, etc.) and they worked perfectly in Windows 7. Possibly a setting I am missing.

(2B) all other hardware - video, printer, etc. seems to be working fine.

(3) I use Carbon Copy Cloner to do my backups and apparently it does not like backing up Windows. Kept freezing the entire computer that I had to reset the iMac 4 times. Emailed their tech support and was told that CCC will backup the data files but not the Windows system directory.

(4) biggest mistake is I did not make my Bootcamp partition large enough, thinking I could use Bootcamp Assistant to change the size. But apparently I have to delete the Windows Install and start all over again. You would think there would be an easier way to increase the size of the partition.

I've successfully upgraded to Windows 10, and I'm currently using what you could called "modded" AMD drivers. I have used them fore a while, after I grew tired of no updates, and learned about the method on some forums. Right now I have installed the AMD Catalyst 15.7.1 update, and it runs just fine. Have used modded drivers for some months, and haven't encountered any issues (once I got a successfull install).

I have a Mac Pro (2013) with the D700s.

The process, which actually is quite easy:

1. Download the latest driver (at the moment of writing 15.7.1), the AMD Omega 14.12 driver, and the official December Bootcamp Driver 14.301.

2. Make a new folder called "modded driver", which purpose explains itself.

3. Copy everytning from the latest driver to "modded driver".

4. Copy everything from the Bin64 folder of the Omega driver and overwrite everyting in the Bin64 folder of "modded driver".

5. Copy "InstallManagerApp.exe" and "InstallManager.dll" from the Bin64 folder of the December Bootcamp driver, and overwrite the corresponding files in the Bin64 folder of "modded drivers".

6. Now you are ready to install the driver. Just run "setup.exe" in the root folder of "modded drivers"

Now you should have new and better performing drivers installed, working perfectly with Windows 10.

If you have problems with the Catalyst software, which I had on the latest driver updates in Windows 8.1 (but not anymore on Windows 10), do the same process with an earlier version of the driver (15.5 worked for me), run the setup, and chose custom installation. Here you only chose to install Catalyst. Now Catalyst should work properly too.

Also, if you encounter any more problems using this method, you should uninstall the driver using "Display Driver Uninstaller", and probably delete everything AMD related in the registry (CMD+R, regedit).

Hope it works for you too! User uploaded file That being said, I'm really disappointed in the Bootcamp support, and the driver updates. I'm actually thinking about selling my Mac Pro, and building a pure Windows desktop, and no more AMD!!! I'm doing a lot of video editing in Premiere Pro CC, and have the experience have disappointed med, compared to how much money I put in it. No way I want to switch to FinalCut X (testet it with the trial). Also I game a lot, and that's not great in either OSX or Windows/Bootcamp, especially on new games that require driver updates with new profiles. I can play Borderlands 2 in 4K, but almost can't play The Witcher 3 in 1080p, even with the latest (modded) drivers.

Btw. don't blame me if you brick your GPU (which I don't think it's likely to happen, but I just have to say it).

IF you want to speed it up, go to microsofts site and get the tool that detects your machine, it loads and does it instantly. I've done the new 5k iMac everything works flawlessly bar the X295 vega card, the screen looks fine but games run like a dog as it needs a proper anti driver, tried forcing etc but it doesn't work need to wait for Apple.

as for the older Macs I would have though you should be ok...

Of course it worked fine on your PC. This thread is talking about installing Windows 10 on your Apple computer using Boot Camp. There are no Boot Camp Windows 10 drivers. Wait until Apple creates and releases the Windows 10 drivers.

Did you even need to reply?

This is a user-to-user technical community forum. The desire to jump into an unsupported configuration with W10 and be on the bleeding edge causes severe bleeding as is obvious on this specific discussion forum and more so in this specific thread. You can always choose to ignore any posts you are not interested in. Despite repeated caveats of caveat emptor, users still want to push square pegs in round holes without realizing the ramifications of such decisions. Some will fit, others will not. YMMV. Please be respectful of others in the community. 😉

You can try using CampTune (Paragon) to resize the partition. BACK UP FIRST.
