I cannot find Tools when in Photos

I have an iMac OS X Yosemite. I need to resize (not crop) my photos, I had my camera on the wrong setting so they are 7MB far too large.

I have googled this and it said go to 'Tools' ... this is missing from my toolbar at the top of the screen, can I get it back. I did try an app called 'Photo Resize Lite' but it was really difficult to use, I am sure there will be some way around this problem on my iMac.

iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

Thank you for your help Carolyn. I did as you said...sounded so easy but its taken me ages to figure out the preview app..hope I can remember. I was merrily resizing my huge photos when suddenly the round coloured ball appeared and I think it froze the app, so I keep trying to force a quit by holding down alt cmd shift and esc for a minimun of 3 secs...no joy...I will persevere.

Assuming you are using Photos for Mac you can not resize photos in Photos - once a photo is imported into Photos the original can not be modified in any way

To reduce the size of a photos you must do it using other software prior to importing to Photos and during export from Photos

And note that you must never make any changes of any sort to the content of the Photos library using the programs - doing so will corrupt your library and cause dataloss

The only way to downsize your image file size is to export it out of Photos via the File ➙ Export ➙ Export 1 Photo... menu option

In the export window select the JPEG Quality level that you think will give you the file size you need. You may have to try several quality levels to get what you need.

If you change the Size setting you will be reducing the pixel dimensions of the image which will give you a smaller image, not cropped but just fewer pixels. That will also help reduce the file size but may not be what you want.

Yes I am using Photos for Mac, it came with the iMac yosemite, I cannot get iPhotos.

You say I must never make any changes of any sort to the content of the Photos library using the programs - this I do not understand -what programs?.

I do use 'edit' to alter the photos.

I have also tried using an app called PhotoResize Lite which was very complicated... I had to move the photo to be resized onto the desktop then find it in Finder, resize it, move it back into Photos then delete the larger (mb) photo so I was left with the smaller (mb) photo in my Photos Library.

Looks like I will have to move all my photos onto a memory stick, import them into my Microsoft laptop, resize them there, put them back onto the memory stick to reintroduce them to my iMac with a more realistic size... they are 7mb which I think is far too large, it was my own fault with a new camera going on my holidays and not checking the size of the photos I was taking.

Thank you so much for your help.

Exactly as stated NEVER make any changes to the content of the Photos library using ANY program

You do not ever change anything in the library except using Photos - very simple - never change anything using any program

again very simple

To reduce the size of a photos you must do it using other software prior to importing to Photos and during export from Photos

You can use Preview, resize. Photoshop or any other program you want before you import to Photos and after you export form photos - you can not change the photos size while it is in Photos

And possibly you need to look to other software than Photos since you do not seem to like the way it works - you can use anything you want

You are not clear

delete the original then replace it with the smaller photo,

If you are exporting, modifying and importing then good

If you are changing the photos within the Photos library then you are corrupting your library - again Never make andy changes of any sort to the contents of the photos library using the finder or Any program other than Photos
