Photos sync to iCloud - can I exit Photos during initial sync ?

My photos file is huge and is taking a very long time, several hours, and may run into overnight and tomorrow and possibly more ... Can I exit Photos while the original sync is currently taking place between my MAC and the iCloud storage area and have the sync continue in the background ?
