how to disable gray stars/suggested song rating based on album rating

I have three of my own which is quite enough, but making iTunes spawn another window is beyond my powers even if I were interested.

Worked like a charm - but not on Albums that had black ratings. Had to do them one by one.

Ah yes, it was designed not to mess with any album ratings you might have intentionally assigned. Changing:

if album rating kind of aTrack is computed then set album rating of aTrack to 1

to this:

set album rating of aTrack to 1

would have saved you some time, assuming there were no existing album ratings you wanted to keep.

Thank you very much. Your script saved my library as I've had the same problem as OP. Don't understand why iTunes rates songs for me....

For those of you like me looking for steps to follow...

1) Open Terminal

2) Copy/paste following command as needed > Enter, to

Show/Hide hidden files

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles NO

3) Apple menu > Force Quit > Finder > Relaunch.

4) Right-click on Desktop > New Folder. Rename "untitled folder" to "Scripts".

5) Open Script Editor.

6) Locate Desktop/Scripts folder > New Document.

7) Rename "Untitled" to "ClearAlbumAutoRating" > copy/paste following script... > Quit.

tellapplication "iTunes"

if selection is not {} then

set mySelection to selection

repeatwithaTrackinmySelection

set album rating of aTrack to 1

endrepeat

endif

endtell

8) Open Finder > User/Library/iTunes > cut/paste "Scripts" folder from Desktop.

9) Hide files again repeating steps 2 and 3 > Quit.

10) Open iTunes > select songs > run script from menu bar.

We need to erect a monument to turingtest2.

Such an elegant solution to one of those annoying issues that arise when Apple no longer cares about power users.

I've seen this question for years. The answer is YOU CAN'T. Since I have only seen people offer a special app or string of code, it pretty much tells me that there is no quick button.

The way I have worked around it is rating all of my songs one star and creating playlists around the other ratings.

at least they wont turn grey.

Is there a way of adapting this solution to work on Windows? My iTunes library is only on my PC.

Yes, in fact I wrote the Windows versions first. 😉

Doug's Scripts has created a work around.. Called "playlist assist". It creates a new window, you drag songs into it, then it creates a playlist..
