Why is it such a nightmare to update safari and where can I find it? Why is this not automatic?

I keep getting an error on my safari browser saying it is an outdated version, but the link does not take me anywhere in apple to download it. Just a promo of how wonderful it is in apple's site. On the apple icon on my macbook pro, there are never any software updates, and in App store, the only thing to be update is os x yosemite. Which I'm doing, hopefully not a big mistake. But what about the safari updates? Where do I download one and how do I install it?

The newest version of Safari for 10.6.8 is 5.1.10. Safari updates beyond that are either part of a Mac OS X upgrade, or require that a Mac OS X upgrade has been installed on the computer.
