For many years, if I close a MacBookPro it goes to sleep and wakes up when I open it. Suddenly, it asks for a password every time I open it. Did I accidentally do something to cause this?

Open Security & Privacy preference panel. Click on the General tab at the top. Click on the Lock icon and enter your admin password. If the "Require password" option is checked, then uncheck it.
