"Keep ITunes Media Folder Organized" Doesn't

The "Keep ITunes Media Folder Organized" option doesn't do anything unless I uncheck the option, close Prefernces, open Preferences again, re-check it, and close Preferences again. Then it goes through my entire library. Is there any way to get this to work as new files are added to iTunes? Seems like I'm asking for trouble if I force it to go through the entire library every time I add a single file.

WIndows 10

iTunes v12.2.1.16

Other OS, Windows 10

Keep ITunes Media Folder Organized works in conjunction with the Copy files to iTunes Media folder ... option. The latter determines whether new additions always go into the designated iTunes Media folders, as follows:

User uploaded file

The Keep ITunes Media Folder Organized option applies to the cases where media is copied, and makes sure that iTunes uses canonical file and folder names based on Artist, Album title, Song name and disc/track number values. See turingtest2's user tip on Make a split library portable for more info on iTunes' folder layout.

If you're following the correct settings and procedures but still not getting media files in the expected places, then there may be an issue with Windows permissions preventing files being copied or updated - see Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows.

Yes, I know how it's suppose to work. It's just that it doesn't actually work as advertised. When I add my own tv shows, for example, they stay in the Home Movies folder. Cycling the keep organized feature on-off-on moves them to were they belong (in TV Shows/Show Name/Season folders). Meaning the function does actually work (and iTunes has permission to do it), it's just not being triggered when a media file's info is updated.

Oh and, unfortunately, Windows 10 doesn't have a Security tab in the Properties window for folders and files like Windows 7 does. So that posted solution doesn't help as a possible solution.

Thanks!

Ah, that's a known bug that appeared (I think) in iTunes 12.0 and has yet to be fixed. Are you only seeing the issue with videos?

I just checked all three systems that I've upgraded to Windows 10 over the last couple of days (Win 10 Pro/32, Win 10 Pro/64, Win 10 Home/32) and they all have a security tab as part of the Properties editor under File Explorer.

Interesting ... I've not had opportunity to dig into the details of Win10 yet to say why that would be the case. It definitely isn't a Pro/Home distinction - my HP Stream 7 tablet, now running Win 10 Home, also shows a Security tab. One possibility - not a new thing in Win10 - is that the drive you're using isn't formatted using NTFS. There are other ways in which the security tab can be disabled but you'd not normally see those being used except in a corporate environment.

The way that the Read Only box is displayed is Windows' standard (if confusing) behavior - it is always shown is a black or grey square for folders, you'll only see it checked or blank when viewing the properties of one or more files.

Try Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab > Uncheck "Use simple file sharing" and the security tab should appear.

Folders are always marked as read-only, so even when you clear that box and apply the change, when you revisit the properties dialog you get the shaded box, meaning that some of the items in the selection are read-only, and others aren't.
