My son is trying to FaceTime with 2 other friends of his. Does it have the capability for 3 way calling? He wants to do this with his iphone.

No, it does not. I believe Skype does, though.
FaceTime is an Apple system that works through a WiFi/iCloud/AppleID connection so it is technically not a telco utilization. As such, the normal conferencing procedures do not work. FaceTime is a peer-to-peer connection. Three-way does not work.
Apple formerly had video iChat on their computers that used the WiFi/iCloud/AppleID connection and allowed up to 4 people. It was not a telco utilization.
