How do I get the HD to show up on the desktop? it is also not showing in the finder.

For the desktop, go to the Finder menu Preferences, click General in the top of the Preferences window and then select Hard Disks under Show these items on desktop.

For the Finder sidebar, go to the Finder menu Preferences, click Sidebar in the top of the Preferences window and then select Hard Disks in the Devices section.
