iPhone 6 plus touch screen unresponsive (sometimes)

I got a brand new iPhone 6 plus from the Apple Store to replace my glitchy old one.

The phone is pristine, and is up to date with the latest 8.4 software.

However, now this one is having the same issues: an intermittently unresponsive touch screen. And this weird thing the screen does sometimes where a white part at the top of the screen flashes and looks like it's trying to come into focus for about 3 seconds at a time. (Trying to describe it)

but the main issue is the touch screen stops working for no reason, sometimes I just tap the screen and swipe my finger around and it starts working again. Other time I have to keep resetting the phone to get it to work.

Its annoying, especially because it happens at bothersome times, like when I'm trying to end a call, or am in the middle of looking up something I need.

Anyone else dealing with this issue, and have a solution?

I ran across a posting where the user opened the iPhone 6 and pointed to a chip in the upper right side of the case below the screen. He recommended removing a little silver panel (3-5 screws ... really tiny ones) and once that is removed take an old SIM card or a piece of plastic from an old credit card about the size of a SIM card and lay it on top of the chip. Then replace the silver colored panel on top.

I got so frustrated that I ordered some tools and figured that if the phone died then I would just have to buy a new one, as this one was nearly unusable anyway. So I tried it.

I've not been able to go more than a few hours without the phone locking up, usually more often. Since performing this workaround the phone works perfectly over the last 24 hours. No freeze ups at all.

The problem appears to be bad micro-soldering under that chip. And if the case gets bent at all some of the pins don't make a good connection. Adding this bit of a physical buffer pushes the chip harder against the logic board and you get a consistent connection. It's just a work around, I'm trying to get to the iPhone 8 when it comes out and don't want to buy a 7 if I can help it. Looks like this was the way to go for me.

It's been very frustrating that the Apple Store/Genius people just tell me that the phone is Pristine because the problem doesn't present itself when they are looking at it......Well, it's fixed now and the Genius I saw at the Apple Store isn't as much of a genius as he thinks he is.

This works! I was like f this phone I am buying a Moto G. I had nothing to lose. So I was like if I crack the screen Ill just finish by throwing the whole ******* thing across the room. So I bent it a little bit and the screen worked again and then stopped again. Fuuuck. So I manned up and bent it just a little more and it clicked. And now the phone works great. ****** construction apple... really ****** indeed. But great fix bandbaaja!

Same, i’ve Gone through 3 iPhone 6+’s all of three had the same problem. I’ve never dropped either of them and they have that same white screen part at the top flashing really rapidly. And the screen becomes entirely unresponsive ! I really do feel like apple owes me a new phone. But they won’t take responsibility for this defect in “THIER” product. So now i got three iPhone 6+’s two returned back and the one iPhone 6+ apple gave to me just sitting in my drawer. Now I’m on a 5s.. apple you need owe me a new phone.

Did you set this phone up as a new device or restore from a backup of your old "glitchy" one? If you restored from back up, you should make an updated back up and then restore it to factory settings. Since you are having the same issues it sounds like you may have had a software issue on your old phone and then transferEd it to the new phone via a backup.

I too am having this problem (for the second time). I had my iphone 6 plus for about 6 months before I noticed any issues. Touch screen intermittently unresponsive, Gray bar flashing at the top of the screen, also intermittently. I tried everything, reset, restore, both with a back up and without.

I took my phone to the Genius bar at my local Apple Store. They immediately offered to replace my phone free of charge (sounded like they had seen this issue before). The guy explained that the likely cause is that there is a loose internal piece just behind the top of the screen. No complaints from me since they replaced my phone for free with almost no questions asked. However, I’ve had this new phone for maybe 2 weeks and as of yesterday I am having the same issue again! I assume they will replace this phone as well, we will find out. Sigh…

Also, one trick, although a temporary fix is to remove the SIM card (if you have one) and pop it back in. For some reason this alleviates the issue, at least in the short term.

I had (have) this same problem. I went to the Apple store and the genius I spoke to told me it was some firmware issue with the logic board. I don't know if that's true or not, but in any case he also just gave me a brand new phone.

The very next day the replacement phone has the exact same problem. I talked to support on the phone. My options were to allow them to put a $600.00 hold on a credit card while they send me a new phone and my old one gets shipped to them. Alternatively they would send me a box to send my phone in so they could take a look at it. I elected for the second option. I haven't received the replacement phone yet.

Hopefully the replacement phone will not have this problem. The odds of getting a replacement phone with the exact same problem should be very low unless this problem is fairly widespread. It seems like Apple has a quality issue to resolve here.

Hi,

Go to an Apple store, this is a board related issue, the molex connection LCD part is seems to be delicate to drops or the normal usage, so it not grab properly the phone, this is as I know and it should be Apple aware of that. Don't restore since this will not solve your issue you will only lose time, also please notice that your screen is not failing, when the touch part of the screen fails it fails. Im an Apple repair specialized technician and I saw this issue 4 times this week all of them 6 Plus. They should replace your phone. The way to repair this issue is to change the molex connection on the board however this is a level 3/4 support you need the equipment and expertise to perform that otherwise you will damage the mother board.

Thanks

If you have a phone case on, take it off.

I have had the same Otter Box on the phone since the day I bought it, I have never taken it off.

Yesterday my screen started being unresponsive to touch. So today I took the thick screen protector off (you know the kind thats tempered glass and the verizon employees will hustle you to buy for $20) and then I took off the Otter Box. It seems to have fixed it. ?? Its been an hour and its been completely responsive to touch.. Idk, maybe the cover was putting pressure on the phone somewhere? Hope this helps you as well!

iPhone 6+, 64 gb with Sprint. This phone was activated October 29, 2014. As a side note, this phone has a screen protector and case on the very first day. Never been dropped or close to water.

Here is a summary of the issues I have been experiencing:

-touchscreen is intermittently unresponsive. Swiping and pressing on the screen does nothing to the phone. This issue started happening Jan 2016.

-recently, I noticed this twice. Phone starts to open random apps, begins to type on it own, activates three finger tap and zooms in on screen. All this random "activity" is done without physically touching the phone. The first time I noticed this is when my phone was on my car mount while I was driving and freaked me out a bit. It seemed as if my phone was possessed or someone had access to my phone and began to start pressing randomly on my screen.

What I have done so far to address this issue:

-one method that seems to work for my phone is to press power button, putting the phone back to "sleep"

-after this, everything is functional and back to normal.

-removed case and screen protector. This does not resolve the above mentioned issues.

-Backed up phone and started to use phone without installing previous backup. Non-responsive touchscreen issue reappeared later that same day.

Apple's response:

-Made an appointment with Genius Bar. They ran several diagnostic tests. The Genius Bar representative said that I have two options, 1. replace the screen for $129. My second option is to replace the phone $299. I mentioned to the rep that this is a known issue that other users have been experiencing, where some users have said their screen/phone have been replaced free of charge because of this known issue . The rep mentioned that I should have brought my phone in while it was still under warranty. I explained to him that while the phone was still under warranty, I never experienced this issue. Why would I bring in my phone for warranty repair if it is working fine? Furthermore, he mentioned that I should have bought Apple Care. I told him that if I have known that my phone would be giving me issues after 15 months of normal use, I probably would not have bought the 6+ and continued to use my perfectly functional iPhone 5. I was so dissatisfied with his response, I decided to go to another Apple Store to see if I could get a walk-in appointment.

-At the second Apple Store, I was able to get a walk-in appointment. After waiting for about an hour, the representative pretty much gave me the same response. I'll give this rep credit, he went and talked to the tech in the back to see what they could do to help me. The tech told the rep that I either have to replace the screen or the phone, both out of pocket costs for me. His last ditch effort was to talk to him manager, after which she said that there was nothing they could do. Although there was nothing they could do for me, this rep was genuinely concerned and tried everything in his power to help me.

After my experience with Apple today, I'm am seriously starting to question the build quality of their products. I have owned, 3 iphones in the past, where only this model giving me issues after 1 year of ownership. I am really disappointed with Apple and how they are handling known issues with the 6+. I will definitely explore other companies before purchasing Apple products in the future.

We are all having the same trouble. I'm starting to think it's a problem with the storage. My 128g is the same as yours yet my girlfriend has the 64g and although it has happened, it has been extremely rare, my is multiple times daily and I've never heard a complaint from 32gig or lower. They replaced the phone yesterday and within ten minutes of leaving the store my first call came in but I couldn't swipe to answer, my daughter even tried cos maybe it was just my finger but nothing. Took it straight back and was told it was "network congestion" that was stopping my screen from responding, lol. I don't appreciate being treated like a dumbarse, so I've fixed the issue myself....my Samsung S7 arrives in a few days. I have the latest Samsung tablet and it's amazing so hopefully their phones are as good. On top of all this I went to restore it when I got home on my Mac to be told the restore data was corrupt so now I've lost all business contacts and everything else which is critical for running my business (and yes, I updated everything and got the same message)

To Apple, we customers don't like being lied to or denied to, we do however understand that sometimes you won't get it right but without the reassurance that you are working on it or to simply be called a liar, WILL drive customers away (like me). I've always had iPhones from the time they were first released but this iPhone 6 Plus 128gig HAS major issues, accept it and reassure us that you are working on it not ignoring it hoping it will go away...it won't. I have video of the problem so it can't be denied and it has been uploaded to Facebook and shared many times to warn people to stay away from the 6 plus 128gig. I even had to create this message in "notes" cos it seems whenever I speak negatively about your product on the forum, the page crashes, coincidence?? Good luck for the future, you're going to need it!
