In Windows 10, iTunes shows another icon on the taskbar when you click on the program that you have pinned to the taskbar.

I am running Windows 10 Pro and the latest version of iTunes for Windows 64 bit (12.2.1.16).

I ran iTunes and used the "Pin this program to taskbar" from the right-click menu while the program was running. This created a 2nd iTunes icon on the taskbar. When I closed iTunes it became the only icon again. When I click on the icon to run iTunes, a 2nd iTunes icon is always generated instead of the "pinned" one becoming highlighted, as happens with other applications.

I have tried various methods of fixing this, including some solutions that were suggested when users had this issue with the Windows 7 taskbar. None of these methods work. For example one of the most popular solutions to this issue from the Windows 7 era is to unpin the highlighted icon while the program is running and repin it. This does not work. I have tried various combinations of unpinning and repinning and nothing seems to get iTunes to use the one icon on the taskbar like every other program.

Has anyone had a similar issue yet with iTunes and Windows 10? And if so, have you found a solution to it? Thank you.

I am having the very same issue plus itunes if causing my task bar to hang in the raised position and will not allow it to auto hide. I've had to kill windows explorer in task manager and restart it to unhang it without rebooting and it's quite annoying. I'm also running classic shell and 8gadgetpack to make 10 pro 64 bit look like 7 and I don't have a hanging issue on any other pc except this one with itunes on it.

Im having this exact same issue, I'm not sure if its to do with maybe 10, as if you right click skype and then select 'exit' from task bar it wont respond to the command. So maybe its not iTunes but a bug in 10 not handling programs icons in the task bar correctly?
Either way I had to pin itunes to the start menu as the dual icon was messing with my OCD HARD! haha 🙂

HI there, i am also having the same problem. Since i upgraded my OS to windows 10 my itunes was not working properly anymore. When i plug my iphone, itunes will show up but it will continue to hang in my screen forever. So i tried to uninstall the program then download and install it again , because that's what i did before and it works when i was still using windows 8. But now after installation is finished it does not open anymore instead a pop up is coming saying that "the file itunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes". I have no idea why this happen, please share some solution to this, thanks..

I have one machine that had this issue and another machine that worked correctly. Both Windows 10.

I took the pinned shortcut from the working machine and copied it to the not working machine. That fixed it.

Here are the steps.

  • On the machine that is having the duplicate icon issue, make sure that iTunes is pinned.
  • Go to C:\Users\(your user name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar. Note that "AppData" is a hidden folder, but you should still be able to access it if you type the address into the address bar in File Explorer. You should see an "iTunes" shortcut in here.
  • Download this file. If it does not show up as a shortcut to iTunes after the download (with the iTunes icon), rename it to "iTunes.lnk" (that is a lower case "L" after the period), and then it should. Use this to overwrite the shortcut in the folder mentioned above.
  • Taskbar pin should work now. Just one icon.

Thanks Aaron44126! So basically, manually creating a shortcut and overwriting the existing one fixes this.

A small edit might be needed for those whose Explorer does not find the file: modify the shortcut's target path to the folder where iTunes.exe is located. So in my case, "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe" did the trick, as I do not have iTunes installed in the 'Program Files' folder, but rather 'Program Files (x86)'

I followed your instructions but it didn't work. But your idea inspired me. I did the following steps and succeeded:

1. Open your iTunes and pin it on the taskbar.

2. Go to the Task Manager, right click iTunes, choose "Open file location".

3. Copy the path of iTunes.exe. My path, for example, is C:\Program Files\iTunes

4. Go to C:\Users\your account name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar, modify and properties of iTunes.lnk. Change the Target into "(your iTunes.exe path)\iTunes.exe", my Target, for example, is "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe". Click OK.

5. Then you will see that there is only one iTunes icon on your taskbar.

In Windows 10, iTunes shows another icon on the taskbar when you click on the program that you have pinned to the taskbar.
