MacOS and VGA resolution

I am trying to attach a second monitor (a Dell S2309W) to a mini mac running Yosemite.

The Dell has 1920x1080 resolution and works fine with Windows 7.

By default, MacOS is not able to see that the monitor support 1920x1080.

If I install SwitchResX, I can get it to display in 1920x1080 but the horizontal alignment is wildly out and I cannot adjust it using the monitor controls.

Anyone know how to get MacOS to work with a VGA monitor at 1920x1080 or is MacOS not good at driving 1920x1080 displays via VGA?

What model Mini?

What output are yo using for the first monitor and how is it connected?

What port are you using for the Del monitor?

The Dell has both VGA and DVI inputs

Mini Mac 2011 server(s) Using thunderbolt port.

i am trying to connect them alongside some PCs via a KVM VGA switch. The PCs work fine but the mini macs cannot recognise the resolution.

Does it work OK directly to the monitor, not through the KVM?

IIIaass is spot on.

I would use a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter and DVI cable from the Mac Mini to that monitor. Then just switch the monitor's input source between DVI and VGA depending on which system you want displayed.
