What is an ethernet crossover cable, and cost, and will one be required to transfer all data from a PC to a new Mac Mini via an ethernet cable?

1. An Ethernet cable designed for connecting two computers together. Any Mac released in the last few years doesn't specifically require them.

As mentioned by Niel all Macs for the last few years don't need a cross-over cable, this is because they can automatically sense if one is needed and do it internally.

Depending on the vintage of the non-Mac computer, odds are a standard RJ-45 Ethernet
cable (of suitable modern quality) should be adequate for both ends of the connection.
However if the old computer has at least USB1.1 it probably has standard Ethernet;
unless it only has USB due to an upgrade card or bus arrangement in a tower model.
The standard configuration 'features' on a computer's logic board can date them.
