Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
There is a small clock-like icon on the iphoto (V 1.0.0 - 215.65.0) menu bar on Mac Desktop (OS X 10.10.4) that has been stuck for two days with a drop down stating, "Importing 408 photos". What is this? I believe that all photos were imported.

From what you say, I think you are talking about the new Photos app, included in OS X 10.10. There's nothing to be worried about if you can use the apps as usual: maybe it is trying to retrieve your photos from iCloud.
Use the Force Quit command under the Apple Menu.
I just tried closing iphoto and got a drop down menu saying that the task would be cancelled if I quit. I believe I have finished importing photos but am concerned as I can't figure out these 408 that are "stuck". I've been learning to use the cloud also and I just don't want to lose photos.
What choice do you have?
Thanks. I went ahead and closed iphoto. Now when I try to open it I get a message box, "Closing the library...". i guess I should try a force quit but I am concerned about it.
Make a back up first...
I don't know how to back up the whole iphoto but I have Time Machine. Wouldn't that be a back up?
If it's set up correctly, yes.
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
