Hello everyone,
I just downloaded some widgets from Apple's widget page. When they went into my Downloads folder I got a security warning that the files could not be opened because they are from unidentified developers. I am familiar with the warning. What steps should I take to make sure that they are safe to install?
iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)
You need to enable GateKeeper.
Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy then select the General tab.
Select: Mac App Store and identified developers
If that area is grayed out, click the padlock icon to make changes. You may be prompted for your admin password before proceeding.
Then you should be able to download widgets.
Dashboard Widgets are a piece of history, now. They were created well before Apple started having apps CodeSigned for security. You can right-click on them and choose Open. It will still warn you, but you can choose Open again and they should install.
