MacBook Pro Terminal Doesn't Work

Hi all,

I have a Late 2013 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro, and I am using OS X Yosemite (version 10.10.4).

I've been experiencing an issue with the Terminal App: When I open Terminal, I see "Last Login: (time) on ttys000", but Terminal doesn't respond when I enter commands.

I read that I could try typing Control-C, and Terminal accepts commands normally, but I find it inconvenient since I often run double-click scripts.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Do a backup.

Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Terminal.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Back up all data.

Select

Shell ▹ New Command

from the Terminal menu bar. Uncheck the box marked

Run command inside a shell

if checked.

Copy and paste the following line into the text box that opens, then press return:

mkdir disabled_shell_files

Close the Terminal window that opens. Repeat with this line:

mv .profile .bash_history .bash_profile .bashrc .inputrc disabled_shell_files

Your old shell initialization and history files will be saved in a directory named "disabled_shell_files" at the top level of your home directory. It's normal that some of these files will not exist, and therefore you will get some "no such file" errors.

Close the window, open a new one, and test.
