Macintosh Classic boot problems

Hi guys,

I hope that you can fix that problem..

Yesterday, I bought a Macintosh Classic with the keyboard and mouse (ADB). It works but when you turn it on, for the first 10-15 seconds it shows a dark grey screen. After, the screen becomes brighter with the same background and the pointer shows up. I got it running for 15 mins but nothing happened. I also noticed that there was no startup sound. Please help me I am so sad about never seeing this guy running properly. I Tried startup keys such as shift and probably all of these. With shift, an error message came with the sad mac face. I tried to get it back, but it never went back even with other keys. When I turn it on, it stays with the mouse pointer and that gray pattern. I can also move the pointer around.

Cheers,

Sam

>The diskette is 1.44 mb. With my old PC it got formatted successfully.

Was that a System 6.0.8 floppy that you had made from a (1.44 MB) disk image (like http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English -North_American/Macintosh/System/Older_System/System_6.0.x/SSW_6.0.8-1.4MB_Disk1 of2.sea.bin and http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English -North_American/Macintosh/System/Older_System/System_6.0.x/SSW_6.0.8-1.4MB_Disk2 of2.sea.bin) via StuffIt Expander and WinImage on the Windows PC (similar to the process described above for the Network Access floppy)?

>I can't install the system 7 or 6 though..

Would it be correct to assume that the computer now boots all the way from a floppy (so that you can reach the Installer), but that then something happens? Any messages on the screen at this point?

If a floppy boots properly, does the computer recognise the hard disk (the original hard drive or the drive from the SE)? If not, have you tried Apple HD SC Setup?

>Do you think that the system installed on my SE would fit on the classic?

On the original Classic hard disk, or are you planning to move the SE's hard drive? There are some special files for the Classic (such as the brightness control), so a new installation via an installer would be preferred. The difference is not huge, though (the Classic is basically a more modern SE).

Look at the description (in italics) for the Network Access disk earlier (that disk will work as a boot floppy for a Macintosh Classic with more than 2 MB of RAM). Follow the instructions to the letter for a test. The System 6.0.8 files can be handled in a similar way.

>Can you use winimage with the .bin file or jsut .img files?

You cannot use WinImage with the .bin file. First, you have to use StuffIt Expander to decode the .bin. The result (after a few intermediate steps) will be an image file (.image). That .image file can then be processed by WinImage. Macintosh disk images with the .image suffix are typically Disk Copy 4.2 files, which usually can be transformed into real 1.44 MB floppies by WinImage (Mac files with the .img suffix are normally Disk Copy 6.x.x images, which are different).

Try resetting the PRAM: Insert the Network Access floppy. Power on the computer. Press the four keys Command(Apple) + Option + P + R immediately after the startup sound. Keep the keys depressed until there is another startup sound.

If this does not work, something may be wrong with the floppies (floppy drives could be out of alignment). Also, we shall not rule out the possibility of another hardware issue (leaking electrolytic capacitors, etc).

A process as described should work well on any old PC (with a built-in floppy drive) running something like Windows 95 or XP. Did you use the StuffIt Expander version for Windows mentioned to decode the MacBinary (.bin) file? It could be a later StuffIt Expander version as well, providing that you get a file called Network Access.image as an intermediate result, and that this .image file is accepted and can be handled by a Windows disk image application (WinImage).

Otherwise, you could ask someone with another approx. 1991-1997 Macintosh computer (with a built-in floppy drive) for help. In this case, the MacBinary (.bin) file would be downloaded or transferred to that Mac as it is. Once on the Mac, one would use an appropriate version (such as 4.01 or 5.5) of StuffIt Expander for Macintosh to decode the .bin. The resulting .image file can then be sector-copied to a floppy disk via the Make A Copy button in Disk Copy 4,2 (http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English -North_American/Macintosh/Utilities/Disk_Copy/Disk_Copy_4.2.sea.bin). This is the best solution.
