i had to delete my old backups because they were incomplete & now essentially am doing an initial backup. the estimated time remaining has progressively increased since i started & is now up to 2hrs. i started this backup over 1.5hrs ago. i have about 27GB used on the phone (not sure total amount being stored on icloud) & Wi-Fi speed 10Mbps.

That wifi speed may well be your download speed, your upload speed may be much slower. It's not really possible to say how long it should take without much more information, but overnight wouldn't be unusual for an initial back up.
You should probably cancel the backup & connect it to the Mac via the USB cable.
If your figure of 10Mbps is accurate it may take around 6 hours… (assuming the wifi is not being used by others).

USB 2 can transfer at around 60MB/s (that is megabytes, not megabits), real world is a little more like 30 - 50MB/s
e.g. about 12 minutes. iOS may not keep up with the maximum USB speed, but even so it will be quicker than wifi.

Once the initial backup is complete you should be able to toggle it back to the wifi backup type & it shouldn't be as bad.
P.S 10 Megabits per second is a terrible wifi speed, it is basically 802.11.b from 1999!
backup usally takes longer time as it shows and also it depends on the network speed.so 27GB may take longer time
P.S. I assumed above you are creating an iTunes backup not an iCloud one.
iCloud backups will be slowed by whatever speed your internet has - frankly if you only have 10Mbps where the device is charged I would suggest that iCloud is not a real solution for you.
My upload speed is 1 Mbps, I have no problems backing all my devices up to the cloud.
i am sorry you feel my wifi speed is from 1999. it is for home/personal use & feel like it is sufficient for my needs when i actually am home not at work. i do not have a mac. i was doing this backup so i could transfer all my information from this phone before i purchased a new one. if you feel icloud is not a real solution for me than what would you suggest be a better one?
i was incorrect on my speed & it is actually 2Mbps (upload), 20Mbps (download). the time remaining has finally decreased to 50min but again has said that for the last 20min.
It's nothing to do with how I feel. If your WiFi only supports 10Mbps as you mentioned it is slow by modern standards. It is unclear how you measured that figure, so it is probably only your outbound internet connection that operates at that rate, the local network may well be faster, especially if the access point is configured correctly & was made in the last 5 or so years. If you have no other way to get online then all you can do is wait.
iTunes is far faster to backup over USB for many Gigabytes of data. A Mac or PC will finish a backup in minutes not hours. If you have a cellular data plan that may also be faster for iCloud backups if you have 4G (LTE can run up around 150 - 300Mbps), however it can eat up most data plans if you are not on a truly unlimited plan. It also depends on what rate the carrier limits you to.

That seems a long time to leave an iOS device connected to power & locked. iCloud backups require those two conditions for automatic backups.

There won't be anywhere near 27 GB to back up, most of that will be stuff that can be downloaded from various sources after the phone has restored. I have 40.2 GB in use on my phone, my back ups size is 2GB, this is one of the reasons I initially told the OP it wasn't really possible to say how long it might take, it depends on what needs backing up and not whats on the phone.
My initial back up was completed over night, I'd have it on charge overnight in any case, so there were no unusual conditions involved.
