ipod driver not found

Hello.

My ipod classic was working with my itunes (syncing etc) but around 10 months ago it stopped working. The ipod is no longer recognised by the computer and does not appear in itunes.

I have tried a variety of fixes, including following all the instructions on this page- Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 - Apple Support

and on this page- iPhone, iPad, or iPod not recognized in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support

but I have the same problem still.

When I go to device management there is a yellow triangle next to the ipod when it is plugged in. When I click on this I get the following error message:

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

There are no compatible drivers for this device.

To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.

When I try to update the driver automatically I get this message:

Windows could not find the driver update for this device, see manufacturer's website.

Apple mobile device USB driver does appear in device management with no yellow triangle, and appears to be functioning OK.

Any thoughts? Thank you!

It is important to perform some manual folder removals as directed before rebooting and reinstalling. Failure to do so may leave outdated files in place which can impact on the performance of the reinstalled program.

Use WinLogoKey+R to open a Run dialog, type in services.msc and press enter. Look for the iPod Service and make sure it is started. If you don't see it at all then iTunes isn't installed properly.

You iPod classic relies on the iPod Service rather than Apple Mobile Device Support.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

If the issue persists and you have a 64-bit system try the for older video cards version which is a 64-bit installer for mostly 32-bit code, similar to all 64-bit versions of iTunes up to 12.1.

If you have Norton/Symantec AV try temporarily disabling it for a set period and rebooting the computer, then see if the iPod will connect.

If you haven't already done it, try an alternate known good cable.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have done a complete removal and re-install of itunes, following a similar guide to the one you directed me to (removing one program at a time in order) with no success. It is definitely not the cable I have a few and they all work with other devices. I have also disabled the anti-virus software and tried finding a driver then, with no success. The USB ports all work fine when I connect a printer etc.

The computer is recognising that the ipod is attached (it appears in device manager) but it cannot find the correct driver for the ipod when I try and install one. What is ipod service? I don't think I have seen that in any of the files that I have looked at.

I have followed as you suggested- ipod service is there and is running. Is it possible that the ipod is just not finding this driver because it isn't looking in the right place for it? (Sorry for the lack of technical language.) Is it possible to figure out where it is and direct the ipod to it?

What happens if you put the iPod in disk mode before connecting to the computer? Does it show in Windows Explorer? Does it show in iTunes?

Hmmm... doesn't appear in itunes, doesn't appear next to the drives (C:, D: etc) in 'This PC'. Continues to appear in device manager under'other devices' with the wee yellow triangle.

Try removing the device entry with the yellow triangle, then reboot and try connecting the device again.

Still no luck- it just reappears with the same yellow triangle.

Someone has suggested to me that it might be a windows issue (rather than an apple software issue) and upgrading to windows 10 may help. I'm not sure what that would achieve, and may complicate the problem further?

I'm afraid I don't have anything more to suggest, but you may well find the issue is resolved by installing a new version of Windows.

Thanks again- just so you (and anyone who has a similar problem) know: I upgraded to windows 10 overnight and my ipod appeared in itunes as soon as I connected it (without having to do anything). It is currently syncing all the music I have added in the last 10 months (*crosses fingers that it works*).

It was a free upgrade (from windows 8) as well.
