i want to use 'pages' to make a photobook in 'photo' with hi res photos/ is this possible?

im about to buy a new computer with the latest system and and want to stay within apple software as im retired and can afford multiple softwares.

I thought i would be able to make photobooks using pages and photo.

So far ive looked at forums and found that you can

• set up custom sizes in pages and

• you can PRINT to pdf controlling the dpi. (300)

• then preview will open the pdf and export to jpeg , hopefully with controlled dpi ie still at 300. then

• i can place this jpeg in photo and create a photo book.

Am i on the right track please?

Also does iwork come with the new computer?

I want to put pages of text in. I know the text resolution will not be optimum. But it the best way I can do a little family history cheaply and well as a book. I suspect Tom is thinking of this when he says i'll get unexpected results. But Tom doesnt say what these might be, so i cant judge his reply. But perhaps you can do more in pages than i suspect. Hard to know. Is the pages for ipad similar? I can download that and have a look?

Thanks for taking the time to answer Tom. But that is exactly what i am doing with my old mac, (with a family history at the moment). Exporting jpegs from an old copy of indesign and putting them into iphoto. (Not photo) But this old mac is going to die and i need a new one because i cant match it with the ipad systems as they progress. EG. Im using YNAB on the ipad and i cant put the mother program on Panther. Ive been with Mac since 1884, put in thousands of dollars to keep up, but now i wont be able to as i am a retiree with tight budget. So im trying to limit my programs to very few. Hiring in design is overkill, for a project that is taking months to complete, and i am prepared to have text coming out at 300 dpi instead of hi res. So i want to work with what comes with the machine if possible.

if there are any other unexpected outcomes , i would appreciate more understanding of what they might be?

I copied a deteriorating booklet - by scanning each page into photoshop - and cleaning/restoring each page. -- I then pulled the pages in order into IPHOTO and created an album -- I then printed the entire album to PDF - so I could give family members a digital and duplexed copy of it.

Not sure about the pages part - try different save as - to get a format for IPHOTO - you can also copy and paste pictures into pages.

You do not need a big single document -- the booklet I scanned had 60 pages -- only I have the separate pages.

Yes. Thanks icloudy. This is similar to my intent. A book for me and my sibs perhaps and pdfs for the wider family. its just that i am intending to make the book in pages and then get a photo album. Im beginning to feel it might be workable. Ill download pages for ipad and have a look. Of course i want to work on the imac. Its take a long time to work on these projects. IPHOTO was very good but PHOTO is what ill need to use when i get a new machine.

Thanks for all your input.

I guess I don't understand why you want to use Photo. What it creates for Apple to print the album is just a pdf. So you are going through a whole additional stage of converting your doc to graphics and then to pdf, with all the attached potential for quality reduction and resolution glitches. Why not just export your Pages doc to pdf in the first place and have someone other than Apple do the hard copies?

Tom, I agree,

Last time i rang apple Australia with this query. Does apple use pdf to make ibooks, but i received a bit of a push away. Maybe there was no way i could send a pdf directly to the service as iphoto , and i assume photo, has a dialogue box that sends it off from within the program. I also assume the dpi required was perhaps 150dpi as many services only require this for pdfs to print on inkjet? printers. The file would be very big as im using as many pages as allowed, even as a pdf.

If you know how i can do this (ie an address) i would be delighted. If you are from Apple, then maybe its too small an issue, but there are some of us out there who love the photobooks apple provides and would be grateful for a pdf direct workaround. (:

Looking forward to an update

From other posts on this site - both pages and Photos seem to be losing functionality - as it becomes use this on any device anywhere.

You may want to consider checking out Corel Products -- Word Perfect the one used for publishing - or even Adobe's latests Photoshop etc suite.

Plus with their latest pricing - you pay a monthly licensing fee and get release updates - as opposed to paying a lump sum up front.

Nobody in these forums is from Apple. There's no way to submit your own pdf to the photo books system, you have to use one of the commercial services (search "self publishing" on google for some options).
