30" Cinema Display / Xbox 360

I recently ordered all the cables necessary to try and use my LCD with my 360.

Basically the route goes as follows:-

360 -> MS VGA cable with gender changer -> Lindy VGA to DVI (15HDM/DVI-F) -> embedded dual-link DVI cable from the 30" CD.

The Lindy cable states it supports dual-link.

My problem is that the display doesn't pick up any signal at all. If anyone has any ideas they'd be appreciated.

you have all the physical adapter necessary to make the connections, however... the ACD is not DVI-I... it is DVI-D. DVI-I and -D are not different formats of DVI, it merely states what type of signals they will accept.

DVI-I has the TDMS digital input and also has an RGB analog video input (on the pins that look like a cross and the 4 surrounding pins)

DVI-D only support the TDMS digital input. Most DVI-D displays also have the physical slots to accept the analog pins, but this is only to prevent cable incompatibilities.

When you get an adapter, it does not convert digital to analog or vice versa, it only allows the appropriate pins to get connected to the correct pins on the other connector. In short the ACD cannot accept a non-digital source (HDMI or DVI). I have heard rumors that MS does support digital output, but there is no product yet that breaks it out from the console. I have also heard rumors that there will be some form of digital (HDMI likely) to coincide with the HD-DVD release, but no one knows for sure if this means that only the DVD playback will be supported on the HDMI or if it will be both gameplay and DVD. The other problem that you face is that the 30" ACD only supports a small handfull of display resolutions. None of those happen to be equivelant to an HD signal... like 720p (1280x720) or 1080i/p (1920x1080). that might create another problem... as the XBOX can definitely not do the 30"'s native resolution. it is up in the air if it can even do one of the supported (but crummy looking) rez's like...
1280x800
1024x768
1024x640
800x600
800x500
640x480

by the way, dual link DVI is another term, but unrelated to your current problem. single link or regular DVI has 1 TDMS signal set. dual link DVI has 2 sets of TDMS signals for resolutions higher than 1920x1200.

so... you could have single link DVI-I, single link DVI-D, dual link DVI-D, and dual link DVI-D.

30" ACD happens to be dual link DVI-D.
all other ACD displays are single link DVI-D.

Not quite true,

The preivous gen of Apple Cinema Displays (ADC) receives digital AND analog.
The DVI displays, aka the Titanium, are DVI-D only.

The question remains, does Apple or any other party have adapters like VGA to ADC (that's not ridiculously expensive like the limited Gefen products), or DVI-I to ADC (with an output of DVI-I and not DVI-D as Apple currently sells)..

Thank you for your help!

The DVI displays, aka the Titanium, are DVI-D only.

The ADC on the graphics board provided digital and analog signals, but the flat panel displays only used the digital video, and the CRT displays only used the analog signals. A flat panel ADC display couldn't be used, even with adapters, on a VGA port, even though the ADC may have pins for the analog signals.

Malcolm,
The ADC displays RECEIVE analog signals perfectly fine. I had one hooked up to my PC through the analog port.

I pluged in one of my ADC 23" cinema displays (june 04) into the VGA output, using the adaptor of VGA to DVI-I that came with the monitor, and it worked beautifully. This indicates that the display takes an analog signal.

Check it out in Wikipedia.

Cheers.
