WD My Passport external drive

I have recently replaced my Time Machine Backup drive to a WD My Passport 1Tb. It has worked successfully for over seven days then today it failed to backup. The drive disappeared off my desktop and switched off. The dialogue box gives 'RAID' Configuration Error". I have tried unplugging the drive and reconnecting. Same thing; works for about a minute then disconnects itself with the same message. After consulting with WD Tech Staff, I tried the drive plugged into my Macbook. It worked no problem. The error appears not to be with the drive but with My iMac 27. Has anyone experienced this problem? Is it a driver problem?

Sorry about that Lex, I should have realised. Ran the check again and copied it straight from the Etrecheck results rather than the Clipboard:

Read this before you begin uninstalling:

You have two serious software problems and a few less important ones:

1. CleanMyMac: this is a real mac killer: you must uninstall completely. To make it stop: start it, look in the left navigation pannell and choose UNINSTALL, you do not have to answer at all when a browser window shows up.

It is not able to do any harm after this, but harm may already have been caused, like removing languages, cleaning superfluous system files and such. Tell me if you did do that with this app. Then I will give you what might help to get it undone.

2. Uninstall Trusteer: whatever your bankmanager says, this weakens the security of your mac instead of adding to it. You do not need it at all for your online banking, on the contrary.

3. remove WD software, already done)

4. In Safari delete the following extensions: DoNotTrackMe, SiteAdvisor.

5. in SystemPreferences uninstall, Flip4Mac, Apptrap (uninstall completely).

6. Flashplayer: read my notes on Flasplayer at the end.

Before you do this:

in SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems remove all entries with the minus sign underneath. This uninstalls nothing. Then restart now they will not be started anymore at startup.

-- OK, now go about #1. Then restart.

-- Now go about #2: Open the DMG file of Trusteer, it should contain an uninstaller, run it. Make sure that it is gone from the SystemPreferences. Tell me if there is not uninstaller in the dmg file.

-- do never start AdobeResourceSynchronizer.

-- Flasplayer: everyday more leaks and holes are coming in now; FP is old hat, and most websites are already in html5. I propose to uninstall it (and Clicktoflash in Safari). If you want to see the videos that now show "missing plugin", do following:

In Safari->Preferences->Advanced check "Show Develop menu in Safari menu", then in the Safari menu choose Develop, in the choose UserAgent, then check "Safari 81.1 iPad". Now you can see them (there are a few that will not show correctly, you do not want to see those).

Restart after you have done.

This happened to me too... and it's happening to a lot of people it seems... to solve this problem (for me anyways) I did the following

  1. Uninstalled the WD Utility using the Uninstaller that came with it.
  2. Reinstalled the Firmware i got here (also read the important stuff like how to install...) WD Product Update
  3. Restarted the computer

and i haven't had the error since... btw i don't need RAID for mine so if you do... well.. this maybe not the solution for you

I just talked to Passport customer service. This is a glitch in their software which they are working on correcting and when they do there will be an update. In the meantime, Find WD utilities in your applications and uninstall it. It will not stop your passport from working, it just solves the problem. I did this while I was on the phone with customer service and it solved the problem immediately.
