Is this Share/Export Speed Normal?

Hi all,

So i'm currently trying to share a video i created in FCP X to youtube. The video is approximately 16 minutes longs. It has basic effects and transitions but quite a few in total through the clip and a lot of key frames.

My machine isn't brilliant. It's a Macbook Pro mid-2012 running Yosemite 10.10.4, processor is 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7, graphics is NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB, and memory is upgraded to 16GB RAM.

Earlier i tried to share the video in 1080p and it took around 5 hours for about 40%. Now i'm doing in 720p and it's taken about 20-30 minutes for 5%. Are these speeds normal? If so, how can i speed this up?

I'd open Activity Monitor and check what's going on – particularly with memory.

CPU usage for FCP X is around 60-70%. Memory usage is about 800mb for FCP X and 1 gb for the Kernal_Task.

So is the speed normal? I mean it's just a video consisting of still photos with some effects. It's quite basic. I was thinking the 16GB RAM would be sufficient.

No, it's not even close to normal. It should export in approximately real time. How fast it uploads is, of course, dependent on your ISP and your connection.

16 GB is adequate. But I've had a few times on my system when virtual memory was 3x physical memory…and Final Cut slowed to a crawl. If you're not seeing anything for swaps used, it's not the culprit.

Is there anything unusual about the media you're using? Has any of it been run through any third party converters? Do you have less than 10% free space on your system drive? If the answers are all no's…

Try this: Reboot your system into Safe Mode. After you get past the log-in screen, restart normally. Clear FCP preferences by holding down the option and command keys when you launch. Locate your library and reload your project. With the Range tool select a short section of your timeline (say, a minute). Export that to your Desktop as a Pro Re Master File. If things are working, that should take 20-30 seconds.

If the master file export works, the entire YT upload should too.
