BootChamp not working, alt/option for Bootcamp and windows work though...

Hi Guys,

As the thread title states, Bootcamp and windows works, but BootChamp does not. I keep getting a "Bless Failed" error (See below). The Windows 8 installation is on a separate drive that is partitioned 80/20 for windows and Parallels, but I did not change/move the partition. I did not alter this drive in any way. Again, Windows still works and I can still boot into it VIA Bootcamp (Using and old card with EFI in my Mac Pro). OSX is on a separate drive : A PCIE SSD from Other World Computing, and I did do a Carbon-Copy-Clone of it to put on a new larger PCIE SSD (Also OWC) and everything worked fine, BootChamp worked once or twice, and then I restarted again... and then it didn't work. 😟 ...No idea why.

Part of my problem is that I have a new "unsupported" video card in my Mac Pro (2009 upgraded firmware to 2010) that I need to use on the windows side, so I NEED BootChamp. The video card is an nVidia GTX 920 SC and does NOT have EFI so I cannot use Bootcamp when this card is in. I have to use BootChamp to switch over to windows, because without EFI (As some of you may know) you can't see the light grey boots-creen with Apple logo. I retained my old GT 120 video card WITH EFI so that I could do things that require it and swap between them pretty often (OSX Updates).

I read through some threads here and found some info from generous helpful people who know what the **** they are doing (like Loner T), and put together some info that was often requested in other threads in order to help others provide me with direction.

Just a heads up, in the output below, Disk 0 is the PCIE SSD that OSX is installed on, the three 1TB Disks : 1, 2, and 3 are stripped into a 3-disk RAID 0 which culminates into one 3 TB Disk listed as Disk 5. Disk 4 is the 1TB drive with Windows on it.

Any and all help is appreciated, let me know if you know what the issue is, or if you need me to provide more info for a better picture of the issue.

1. What is the current version of OSX?

2. The following message is where the problem seems to be.

Legacy mode NOT suppported

3. As a test, can you remove the drives that make up the RAID set physically, and test Bootchamp?

Let me also mention the MacPro folks, if The hatter, Allan Eckert, lllaass and others have any opinions. - Mac Pro .

Hi, LT, Thanks for the quick response. I'm not in front of my computer right now, so I can't check the OSX version, but I know it is the absolute latest version of Yosemite. I just updated yesterday. I'll confirm exact version number, and try removing the RAID array when I get home.

Hi, I checked my version, I updated to OSX Yosemite 10.10.5. I pulled the 3 Drives that were striped in a RAID, and tried restarting, and then tried BootChamp and it still gave me the bless error.

I also tried QuickBoot and that gets as far as sgutting down my computer but it starts right back up in OSX.

For what it's worth, when I start up and hold Alt/Option and get Bootcamp, it gives me three options, Mac OSX / Windows / and Recovery-10.10,3

1. Can you try booting Windows from System Preferences -> Startup Disk -> Select Bootcamp and restart?

2. Please also test selecting Windows from the Bootmanager using the Alt/Option and check if it boots?

3. Are Windows Automatic Updates enabled?

Re: #1 : When I tried booting by changing the startup disk it gave me this error :

Re: #2 : The Bootmanager is when you restart and hold down Alt/Option at the chime correct? If so, yes Windows boots and works fine from there (But no good video card, I'm still on the GT 120 due to the need for EFI 😟 )

Bootchamp and Startup Disk have the same issue.

Please post the output of the following Terminal commands from the OSX side.

diskutil list

diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

The "sudo" commands will prompt for your password, and it will not be echoed back. You may also see a warning about improper use of "sudo" and potential data loss due to "abuse" of the command.

No, I don't believe so... I started into windows last night with the old video card and the NVidia control panel performed a driver update and everything went well.

P.S. The disk list is showing the drives in a different order than previously reported because I pulled the 3 RAID drives and I plugged in an external drive (Which I will now unplug and re-try BootChamp for the heck of it).

Since disk2 is currently your Windows disk, can you post the output

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk2

sudo fdisk /dev/disk2

sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk2s3 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

These will show the GPT, MBR and the NTFS header on disk.

HYG, thanks. FYI I unplugged the external drive (It was disk 0) but I think Disk 2 is still the Windows Disk. If not I can re-do it :

Ok, thanks. This was a normal install of Windows 8 using Bootcamp Assistant. I just used WinClone to create a backup of windows just incase i needed it but haven't used it yet.. I did use Carbon copy cloner to move OSX from a 240GB PCIE SSD to a 480GB PCIE SSD, but Bootcamp still worked after I did the Clone. For a while.

If you remove the 480g OSX, does Windows boot correctly?

Can you also elaborate on the GT120 and EFI a bit? I am not clear on what issues you encounter and what EFI issues you currently have.
