BootChamp not working, alt/option for Bootcamp and windows work though...

Hi Guys,

As the thread title states, Bootcamp and windows works, but BootChamp does not. I keep getting a "Bless Failed" error (See below). The Windows 8 installation is on a separate drive that is partitioned 80/20 for windows and Parallels, but I did not change/move the partition. I did not alter this drive in any way. Again, Windows still works and I can still boot into it VIA Bootcamp (Using and old card with EFI in my Mac Pro). OSX is on a separate drive : A PCIE SSD from Other World Computing, and I did do a Carbon-Copy-Clone of it to put on a new larger PCIE SSD (Also OWC) and everything worked fine, BootChamp worked once or twice, and then I restarted again... and then it didn't work. 😟 ...No idea why.

Part of my problem is that I have a new "unsupported" video card in my Mac Pro (2009 upgraded firmware to 2010) that I need to use on the windows side, so I NEED BootChamp. The video card is an nVidia GTX 920 SC and does NOT have EFI so I cannot use Bootcamp when this card is in. I have to use BootChamp to switch over to windows, because without EFI (As some of you may know) you can't see the light grey boots-creen with Apple logo. I retained my old GT 120 video card WITH EFI so that I could do things that require it and swap between them pretty often (OSX Updates).

I read through some threads here and found some info from generous helpful people who know what the **** they are doing (like Loner T), and put together some info that was often requested in other threads in order to help others provide me with direction.

Just a heads up, in the output below, Disk 0 is the PCIE SSD that OSX is installed on, the three 1TB Disks : 1, 2, and 3 are stripped into a 3-disk RAID 0 which culminates into one 3 TB Disk listed as Disk 5. Disk 4 is the 1TB drive with Windows on it.

Any and all help is appreciated, let me know if you know what the issue is, or if you need me to provide more info for a better picture of the issue.

Thanks!

Kevin

Hi,

So I removed the 480GB PCIE SSD that OSX is installed on and left only the Drive that Windows 8 is installed on, and much to my surprise it booted into Windows 8. No Bootcamp Boot menu. After it booted up, I shut the computer down and reistalled the SSD with OSX.

No real EFI issues... It's just that I need the old GT 120 video card (Circa 2009) to see the Boot screens and Boot Menu because it has EFI capabilities :

The new GTX 980 (Circa, 4 months ago) is built for PCs and thus considered and "Unsupported" video card (No EFI) but nVidia writes drivers so it works in Mac OSX. It's just a bit of a pain in the *** because without EFI I can't see those startup screens and can't boot into Windows via the Boot Manager. Therefore I need a program like BootChamp to set the startup drive to windows temporarily so that I can start into it. I feel like every time Mac do an update lately they screw up the Bootcamp Bless Feature. Previously I would just re-install windows (I have done it 3 other times) this time I decided to reach out for help to avoid that headache. 🙂

Hey, thank you for this, I actually found this post : Boot Camp Assistant cannot be used Tried the PRAM reset and it worked for getting Bootcamp Assistant back and working. I did a permissions repair just for the heck of it.

I didn't do the SMC reset, but I will do that as well for good measure. Next I will try to see if those 3 actions helped fix the BootChamp issue (But somehow I doubt it). Stay tuned, thanks.

YES!!! SUCESS!!! Thank you!

I ran the PRAM reset to fix Bootcamp Assistant, but it also fixed BootChamp, so now I can boot into Windows from Mac OS without EFI again 🙂. I did a Permissions repair as well but I don't think that was the solution because I did that the other day and nothing changed. I didn't end up resetting SMC. I figured, if it ain't broke...

Thank man!

Hey, Kevin. I’ve just begun the same setup as you (GTX 980, Mac Pro 4,1, BootChamp) and after zapping PRAM (which caused the OS to switch back to the regular driver and stop my 980 from working...), SMC resetting, and repairing my disk, I still get the same error with Boot Champ. Bless failed, etc.; looks pretty much like yours.

The only difference I can imagine is that I have my Windows on its own hard drive and that I’m running El Capitan. Does anyone know what I’m doing wrong that what worked for him doesn’t work for me?
