Need a reputable program to track my OSX internet data usage as my lame ISP doe not provide this and I need to switch to a mobile hotspot to improve internet connectivity since no other ISP in my rural area. No idea how much GB I use! Why can't I find a working download for OSX data usage tracking? Any reputable downloads you can recommend?
As far as I know, most ISPs offer ways to do so - I'd check with my ISP first. I found this one at the app store - am not familiar with it though:

Like I said, my ISP does not provide data usage tracking. It's a community-based provider started with federal grant money several decades ago, runs a fiber optic cable to towers around the mountains of western north carolina, which then broadcast a signal to customers' modems. As the equipment fails, the speeds become more erratic, as slow as 0.01 mbps or even slower (if I get 0.1 mbps I'm pretty happy, but it's usually less), to the point of freezing up and needing pages o be refreshed all the time. Already complained to FCC with no response. Pay $35 a month for this nonsense. The organization employs one guy for all of western NC at this point, and feels no responsibility to its customers, as they did not receive continued funding last year so are letting it all fall to pieces. Thanks for the app suggestion, but like I said, I have Mavericks, and the app is for OSX 10.10 and above. Any other ideas?

You might be able to use a DD-WRT.com based router

There are some router vendors that actually ship their routers with DD-WRT installed, and many routers can have their firmware re-flashed with DD-WRT firmware.

I believe the OP already said that this app would not work as it is for Yosemite and higher (after I had suggested the same app 5 days ago).
Thanks for trying, but I found the same page when I Googled as well. The free applications don't work. Can't afford to pay for downloads unless I can be sure they will work. Really don't understand why there isn't a free one somewhere that works!! I give up.
Please accept my apologies for mis-reading the OS requirements. The SurplusMeter app (although no longer supported) should offer a little more info than activity monitor. Its main failing is that it monitors all traffic through a port, LAN and WAN, although it offers the ability to adjust your numbers or pause metering if you're likely to use the LAN for a big transfer.
The ability to switch to ethernet or airport only works if you launch the app from a writeable volume.

Thanks, I found this one when I Googled as well but my Mac Air won't allow me to complete the download because it's from an unregistered developer. Aren't computers supposed to make our lives easier?
If you've downloaded from the link then you should copy from the DMG to a writeable volume.
Right click on the app and select open. You will then need to click on open on the final 'beyond here there be dragons' warning and you're away.

The download source you linked to is not recommended on these forums as their downloads usually contain unwanted additions (adware etc). Neither is softonic and others. The only recommended download sources are either the app store or directly from the developer.
I downloaded the file from the link without incident. The developer's site is no longer active and it's not on the app store.
It does what you're asking for and there is no better source.
