can any type of text be sent to an iPod touch? They have the message app with an iCloud account. I know they can get iMessage, just curious if they can recieve regular text?
I'm afraid not; an iPod touch can only send and receive messages through iMessage. SMS (Short Message Service) and MMS (Multimedia Message Service) are exclusive to mobile phones connected to cellular networks, so the iPod touch can't receive them.
You can get apps for your iPod that allows "texting" to an from other device. However, the other device has to be using the same app.

Take a look at FreeTone, a no cost app that allows you to send and receive text messages to/from any cellphone (at no cost) over wifi from your iPod touch. You get a virtual telephone number where you can receive texts. Note that you can also call and receive calls for free anywhere in the US. There are probably others like this app. Do a Google search for "texting from iPod touch".
You can use Continuity to send SMS texts with an iPod, but you will also need an iPhone.

This feature requires an iPhone with iOS 8.1 or later and an activated carrier plan. You can send and receive and SMS messages through your iPhone using Continuity on other iOS devices with iOS 8, and on any Mac with OS X Yosemite.
