BEFORE REPLACING TOP-CASE CHECK TRACKPAD FLEX CABLE!!!

I had the same problem; first intermittently, then permanently. Apple service didn't find anything using diagnostics when I'd brought it in with intermittent problems. A later visit and a solution was found:

It turned out it was the TRACKPAD FLEX CABLE. A very inexpensive repair compared with replacing the entire top-case! Shame on Apple for fusing the top case, keyboard, trackpad, and batteries into one unrepairable component!

Apparently the trackpad and keyboard cables run together in a cable that bends around the close end of the trackpad under the little cutout for opening the lid. The tech speculated that my cable was pinched or bent too much from my pulling the laptop out of my bag with one hand! Thankfully this is a replaceable part!

Of course, I recommend to anyone else with the problem to exhaust at-home solutions for possible software faults first: resets, reinstalling OS, etc.

Good luck!

Yup, that is the one. In my case however the one that arrive is about half-centimeter longer. Not only that it will be a problem when closing the cover, it also DIDN'T WORK! In the country that I am in, I don't have the luxury of sending it back nor buying another cable without loosing my mind (it took a month!). I have no means to check if the REPLACEMENT cable if it is defective or or not. Good luck to you though!

I ended up buying a new Macbook... grudgingly.

Thank you. Ordered and now waiting for delivery. Hope this fixes the problem at least for sometime long. If issue occurs again, I am planning to get Windows or Linux installed and live with that 😐.

This is the first and last Apple laptop I am ever gonna use. Spend this much money and all they give is one f***g year 😠. Should have taken the signs of Iphone cables going to bits with just months of usage. Top class body and they fit ****** cables that go faulty for no reason. There goes Apple's trust right through the window 😕

Same problem with MacBook Pro mid 2015. Quick work around: If you are on the login screen and internal mouse and trackpad (and bluetooth/USB) didn't work. Unplug all cabels and unplug powercabel. Close the MacBook to force hibernate. Wait a few secounds. Open the MacBook. It should work now. (until next reboot)

If this does not work: If you have a Thunderbold Display you can use that USB ports for a external keyboard/mouse.

[Update] Tried installing Windows 8 and 10 using bootcamp. Successful installations but keyboard/trackpad still unresponsive. Done all the available driver installations, tweaks that can be found online.

For OS X, if we check in System Report -- Extensions, it can be seen that the drivers for keyboard, trackpad/mouse are all disabled. It shows they can be loaded but tried it through Terminal (commands found online) to load them manually and failed.

Been looking for alternate Operating System options for OS X since I feel its still a driver/software issue rather than a hardware one.

I am currently using a Linux Distro Artegos. Tried the Live version first and except the Wifi all others came in box. Fixed the Wifi issue by enabling the Network driver. So removed OS X and installed the Linux version alone in my Macbook. Now the keyboard and trackpad are working fine as they should. Will keep testing this for the coming days and if all is well, I am planning to continue using this and save myself the trouble of going through the Apple guys again.

Same thing happened to me. At first it was intermittent and now the trackpad and keyboard has not worked for about a year. I have tried resets, safe mode, reboot OS, etc. Nothing has worked- paid $2000 for a computer that is essentially useless for being a mobile computer. It is apparent that there is a flaw with these machines and it is shameful that Apple does not back them. I understand that they are moving away from good customer service and cheaper products to maximize profits for stock holders but this method will lead people away from their products.

HI All, I'm almost happy to read that I'm not the only one with this problem.

I got my MacBook Pro retina in early '15, after 10 months the problems started, unresponsive trackpad and keyboard. Back to the store and they fixed it for free, new motherboard and trackpad/keyboard, because still in warranty. After 2 months problems were back! Back to the store, no warranty left because older then a year, Really, WT*, payed more then €550 for the repair, new motherboard, trackpad/keyboard, top cover. 2 months ago, problems got back, exactly the same. Apple says, no warranty, pay €980!!!! for the repair. Not gonna do that! That's almost €1500 in repairs for a computer of €1250!

I'm getting it back this week, I've ordered a new cable for the trackpad, US $6,74, I'm going to repair it my self. Hopefully that's the solution to my problems. Apple really need to accept the fact that there a so many problems with de early 2015 macbooks. Replacement program would be in place!

Don't let yourself get thrown around. It should be a known problem to them. Since it's a default in this model, they should repair it for free. I got my repair for free, on the same appointment. I went in the store with the problem, half an hour later I was out with a fixed keyboard and touchpad, even though my warranty was expired.

If you give them the problem and solution then they can't fool you into expensive repairs outside a warranty. And if they try to talk you into expensive repairs, stand by your point. If not, try another shop or repair it yourself.

I'm experience same issue with my MBP Early 2015 - Keyboard and trackpad not responding, USB keyboard worked but then stop also.

I can confirm that unpluging the internal battery resolve the Issue, and for any case I ordered a new ribbon cable for the Trackpad

can any one explain why unplugging the battery fixe the issue if the problem is fully ribbon cable?

May 28, 2017 12:39 AM in response to liorparsi

Am in the same situation. Thought the problem was hardware related this whole time and bought a ribbon cable too. But saw in another forum regarding the Operating System might be faulty and changed it to Linux after removing Mac OS. Now the Trackpad and Keyboard work perfectly fine even without touching the ribbon cable or any other hardware part. Checked the same with Apple support and they have no clue. All I could deduce was that OSx was not triggering the driver required to work the track and keyboard but linux was doing it. Now I am not too sure about changing the ribbon cables at all.

There goes the only hope we had. Are you sure you have done it correctly cos majority of the issues got resolved by changing the ribbon. I have checked with a local IT team here and they have offered assistance in changing the ribbon if I get them the cable. I have the cable with me now but not entirely sure if it would fix the problem as I was not able to reproduce the issue when using Linux OS.

May 28, 2017 2:09 AM in response to d_ilo

I have tried bootcamp method and installed Win 8 and 10. Tried all possible drivers (both genuine and third party). So removed Mac OS completely and installed fresh copy of linux. Its been working fine since. Using for 2 months without any issue. I am planning to get ribbon changed and try using OSx to check if it will fix the problem or not.
