BEFORE REPLACING TOP-CASE CHECK TRACKPAD FLEX CABLE!!!
I had the same problem; first intermittently, then permanently. Apple service didn't find anything using diagnostics when I'd brought it in with intermittent problems. A later visit and a solution was found:
It turned out it was the TRACKPAD FLEX CABLE. A very inexpensive repair compared with replacing the entire top-case! Shame on Apple for fusing the top case, keyboard, trackpad, and batteries into one unrepairable component!
Apparently the trackpad and keyboard cables run together in a cable that bends around the close end of the trackpad under the little cutout for opening the lid. The tech speculated that my cable was pinched or bent too much from my pulling the laptop out of my bag with one hand! Thankfully this is a replaceable part!
Of course, I recommend to anyone else with the problem to exhaust at-home solutions for possible software faults first: resets, reinstalling OS, etc.
Good luck!
I had the same question but couldn't find a proper answer anywhere. Any linux distro I use, the trackpad was working fine without any problem. Issue found only with Apple and Windows OS. I tried using Windows in VirtualBox when in Linux and trackpad was working in it too.
Due to lack of some required application I had to switch back from Linux. Now installed Mac OS again and problem was still there. So finally tried the ribbon fix and it is working fine till now. Still a mystery why it works with Linux.
Problem solved! I bought a new trackpad cable and replaced it and everything is working perfectly (This is a good instruction video Macbook Pro 13" 2015 A1502 NO Trackpad & Keyboard Fix repair Guide - YouTube ). The cable apparently rubs against the body and shorts (a bad design on the 2015 mbpro 13inch, I can't vouch for the 2014 though) A good tip is to add some electric tape to prevent future rubbing Macbook Pro 13" 2015 A1502 NO Trackpad & Keyboard Fix repair - YouTube
Hi, I have the same problem that all of you.
Anyone solved the problem in other way other than changing the keyboard/trackpad cable?
I booted my MBP retina early 2015 from a pendrive (linux mint) and everything worked great. Rebooted into macOS and keyboard/trackpad still unresponsive.😟
Do external ones work?
Does the Cpas lock light work/chane state when you depress that key?
Try resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM. Yo may have to use an external KB.

- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Having this issue on my 17" MBP 2011 as well. Apple tested & NOT hardware issue. Suggested I do a clean install of Yosemite, worked for 5 minutes & trackpad became unresponsive again (my issue is it won't "track"). PRAM & SMC resets don't resolve the issue. To a lesser extent the keyboard will also become slow to respond at times, as if the keys aren't working. I wish I had never run the latest OS updates. Having to use a mouse on a laptop is counter productive to say the least! I guess no one has a real solution to this issue, I literally spent 4 hours with a Genius & no fix yet. Help us out here Apple!
I have the same issue and also put this question in Apple support community, Apple is not responding to our problems and questions it's very bad.
I think they found this bug in their Operating system and even they don't know how to fix it and try to keep silent regarding this issue. As I have read a lot about this issue, there are so many people who are having this problem. It's not a hardware problem. It will be a big shame for Apple and their Customer support who are silent on this issue.
I think it's problem in Update OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.5. Everyone have the same issue in the version of update.
Let's wait for the next update, if they fix this issue in next update it will be good.

You can wait for the release of El Capitan this fall, but there is no bug in 10.10.5, Yosemite. I have been using every version of Yosemite on a MacBook Pro since each release came out and not one has ever caused these problems. There is something else causing these problems and the user needs to work through each of the steps given by lllaass to be sure their Mac itself is running right.
I have the same problem! It's a shame nobody give a sh**!
Same problem with me - Macbook Pro late 2011 model that I have had since Fall 2012... never had problems with the trackpad prior to the 10.5.5 update, but now can't do basic things with the trackpad that I used to - like highlighting any thing - from Excel spreadsheet areas to text in a message, etc... or trying to clickON and move a tab in Safari... sometimes it works but it requires an inordinate amount of pressure on the trackpad that never used to be this way... very very frustrating... saw where someone said to do the combo 10.5.5 upgrade and I am thinking of trying that, even though I am fully up on 10.5.5 (at least I think I am)... maybe this is Apple's way of telling people with older model hardware to get with the upgrade program... only kidding, they would never do that... but still - very very frustrating...
I've this problem on a early 2015 macbook pro. I've another macbook pro late 2013 which works fine with same os version 10.10.5.
I'm now having this problem too. Any chance you figured out how to fix it?

Same issue for me (MBP 13" early 2015, El Capitan 10.11.2). Unresponsive keyboard and trackpad, sometimes after sleep, sometimes all of sudden. Bluetooth/USB keyboard & trackpad working. Tried resetting NVRAM, SMC, created another Admin session, Diagnostics, emptying cache, libraries (using CleanMyMac), Disk Permissions. Sometimes booting in Safe Mode does resolve the issue, but today it doesn't. Apple Support recommends formatting the hard drive and reinstalling the OS manually without using Time Machine (which I'm reluctant to do, this will take days to re-install everything). The trackpad/keyboard problem may happen when away from bluetooth mouse. I also have some bluetooth & wifi issues (disconnections). There are a number of discussions around this problem, but no-one seems to have been able to solve the issue, apart from the ones that had their Macbook serviced (change of keyboard/trackpad). Most worrying for such a recent high-range Macbook. I'd hope Apple would take this issue seriously and recall the defective model.
I'm having this exact issue on a 2014 MBP/r running 10.10.5. I updated recently (few days ago) and my trackpad and keyboard refuse to work with the OS booted normally, this includes using an external mouse and keyboard. If I go into Safe Mode, it's like nothing is wrong with it. I've backed up my info and erased the disk to reinstall the OS and the same problem persists.
Going to the Genius Bar tomorrow, so we'll see what they say
