Alchemy in Logic, some tips

Here are some tips I just discovered after checking the new Alchemy in LogicX:

Concerning 3rd party libraries:

The new location for Alchemy presets (acp files)

Library (not user)Application Support/Logic/Plugin Settings/Alchemy

So if you own libraries for Alchemy version 1, just drop the entire library folder there with the presets (acp files) then hit refresh in the Alchemy browser. There is no need to move the sample content from version 1 libraries, as the sample path is stored with the old presets. That saves 5 years of my own sound design work, time to party!

Mac Pro (Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), G-Raid

Well, in reality the praise should really go to the Camel Audio programmers as this version is, for all intent and purpose.... the long awaited Alchemy v2 that was often 'whispered' about but never materialized...

Glad that Apple actually included it "for free' in Logic and that they included all the original CA libraries too but I do feel those Windows/VST/Non Logic users and long time CA customers who were also awaiting the V2 update... got a raw deal....

As I posted on another forum, since it keeps asking for you to supply your admin password, that's a warning to say this isn't the correct location to put files.

Every user has a "Audio Music Apps" folder that you're suppose to put your own presets and that's just not Alchemy but anything related to Logic Pro X.

To see the correct location select an existing Alchemy preset and click on "Save As" pretending that you modified it in some way.

When the dialog box pops up to ask for a name, notice the location where it's going to put the preset.

In my picture, the last folder to the right, "Libraries" was already there.

I added "AlchemyV1" and "Samples".

That's where I put all my AlchemyV1 presets.

This Alchemy 2-patch uses additive re-synthesis of 2 images I made with ArtMatic which produces some awesome sounds if you take the time to adjust the re-synthesized data somewhat in the additive editors. Morphing between the snapshots in the video in several passes, the patch is set to morphing between the 2 sources.

The additive re-synthesis sometimes works exceptionally well, like in this example where I re-synthesized multi-sampled bass flute swells and decays which are playing in one source each (4 samples in each source over an 2 octave range of the bass flute). A real improvement in Alchemy version 2 is the fact, that we can now use multi-sampled re-synthesized sounds in each source which gets rid of all the artifacts when extremely transposing sounds up and down. By tweaking the additive parameters the flute sound can morph into something totally different like a church organ, glass sounds and more, check out this video:

Just wanted to share a little night jam I put together with 100% Alchemy 2, a multi-sampled stick cello (cello played with drum sticks - 5 velocity layers/3x round robin - 10 pitches sampled between C1 - G3), a multi-sampled marching drum and a windpad snapshot:

Beautiful, wonderful sounds... I like the little turnaround getting back to the minor.

All sounds in this slightly spooky demo are spectrally re-synthesized, 2 fresh Alchemy patches made today - the four vocal sounds morph into each other using element morphing with separate morph speeds (via LFOs) for spectral and formant morphing, the piano scrapes and string accents are split sounds, 2 in each source, ready for Halloween - go!
