I have a JVC GR-HD1 mini dv cam plugged to my MacPro this machine came with OS 10.4.8 and the latest version of quicktime. I plug the cam into the MacPro's front FW port. turn machine on launch final cut. easy setup is set for DVNTSC 48kHz, ive checked capture and device control presets and they all match DV NTSC 48kHz, control preset is set for Firewire NTSC. it is always set this way never is changed. i click option 8 for L And C, the L&C window comes up but i get the color bars with the black strip running across the screen and message reading preview disabled. the transport controller in L&C controls the cam so i go ahead and log clips as per normal
once im done i click batch capture. the capture screen comes up it gives normal status as it were finding the specified timecode areas then i get an error message stating "Operation cannot be completed as there is no video."

To my observation FCP is seeing the camera and interacting with it but it is not receiving any video from it. Is the Problem FCP or the camera its a JVC GR-HD1 anyone familiar with it?.. ive replaced the firewire cable thining it might have been the problem.

any further insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I have had this problem once before, but, for the life of me, I can't remember what I did.

Rest assured that the problem is not in the "Preview Disabled" bit. The problem is in the "there is no video" part.

It could be that the FireWire is having problems with the "Bus", but I'm not sure. To check, change your Scratch Disk to a USB disk or the Internal drive (don't use this all the time, but for testing you should be fine). Then Eject your FireWire drive and unplug it from the system.

Now try capturing. Does that work?

I sure hope that helps. If not, I'm stuck.

Using an Internal Drive (as long as it is not your System Drive) is great. You just don't want your Media on the same drive as your Applications, because then the computer has to do twice the work on the limited "through-put" of the single drive.

But, since you're using an Internal Drive, and not FireWire, my idea is toast. Bother, I'm stumped. Not surprising, but frustrating.

I hope someone far more knowledgable than I can sort this out. I'm sorry I can't be of more assistance.
