Can I use internal DVD Drive to install Windows?

I have a MacBook Pro 13" (mid-2012 version) with an internal DVD drive and I have a DVD on Windows 7. When I look at the BootCamp Assistant instructions on partitioning and loading Windows, it says to use an external DVD drive to create the .iso file. Can't I use my internal drive?

Those are for something different. You definitely can install Windows using a Windows installer in the computer's optical drive. It is the preferred way.

Hi Kappy - your answer is contrary to the instructions provided here - Create an ISO image for Boot Camp from Windows installation media - Apple Support.

According to these instructions, you are supposed to use an external optical drive if you are using a DVD with the installation copy of Windows on it. Why do you think that using the internal optical drive is the "preferred way" ?

I am currently installing Windows 7 on my Early 2008 MBP 15" and encountered this same issue.

There are two variants to Macs with Optical drives - internal and external.

For all Macs with internal Optical drives (except a couple of 2012 models), Bootcamp/Windows needs to be installed using available internal Optical drives only.

For Macs which do not have built-in Optical drives, an external Optical drive can be used,

a. to create an ISO image to create a USB Installer, or,

b. to directly install Windows and an optional USB (if needed).
