boot camp drivers requiring admin rights for local users on imac late 2014 (retina 5k)

HELP! I am an admin trying to get many computers ready for school and have a hard deadline very soon.

After some initial problems getting Boot Camp drivers to work for installing Windows 7 Enterprise, I got the install to work using Boot Camp 5.1 drivers (the ones recommended for this computer). Everything works great when you are logged in as an adminstrator, but I have come to find out (after installing programs for 2 days) that "users" can log in but there are some problems:

Every time try to log in with a user, it says "preparing desktop", then takes a REALLY LONG TIME (lot longer than should be normal), then a message appears that says "please wait while bootcamp configures services." Two seconds later or so a UAC (user account control) window pops up saying:

"Allow program to update software on the computer?"

Program: Boot Camp

by Apple

Where: Hard drive

more details:

C:\Windows\Installer\7ebb22.msi

If I:

FILL IN: "Boot Camp services completed successfully" - It works, but I can't do this for every user in my network

SAY NO: resolution is really small, but it still logs in

It also happened that after about a minute, it manages to log in, cancelling the UAC window, and starts in right resolution (this happened once, test again). Either way, this window will create great confusion when the students encounter it.

I have also noticed that when I log in as administrator, after login the screen flashes black for a second (almost as if adjusting resolution). I tried downloading video driver directly from AMD. I thought it might be an issue with Paragon HFS+ for windows so I uninstalled it but the issue persisted. It also seems very weird that there is a Boot Camp installer (in temp installer area) running every time someone logs in...

Here is everything else I have tried, too. Help! I have stayed up all night trying to figure this out. I thought it was an issue with permissions (as it worked with administrators but not local users), but what I tried didn't really work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

eddie

TRIED:

1 fill in administrator credentials, works (but cant do this for every user)

2 log in with other users - still happens

3 uninstall paragon hfs+ for windows, tried new user - still happens

4 changing permissions to C:\Bootcamp, giving "users" all access - still happens

5 adding "everyone" and giving all access to C:\Bootcamp, change Bootcamp.exe to "run as administrator" for all users - still happens

6 looked in %windir%\Installer (which leads to location above) did not find first file listed

7 ran "setup" repair on bootcamp thumbdrive with manually downloaded bootcamp 5.1 files - still happens

8 saw that file was C:\Windows\Installer\d6d6d1.msi, put in password, "bootcamp services completed succesfully", found file, changed permissions to give all access to "everyone" - still didnt work

9 double clicked msi file - still happens. I changed back permissions to d6d61.msi file. when restarted, saw an "icals" something error for a second, then it logged out on top of this error.

10 tried thumbdrive with automatic download (bootcamp 6 drivers) from mac side, "this version of boot camp is not intended for this computer"

UPDATE (a long time later):

I have come to the conclusion that the error happened because the drivers that Apple provided via automatic download via Bootcamp or on there support pages did not work properly. I tried this with Windows 10 in the end and there were no problems. My guess is that support for Windows 7 was deprecated (or not given a lot of attention). At the time of this posting Windows 10 was about a year in...

1. Windows Enterprise versions are not officially supported, partly because of this reason. Multi-user capabilities cause problems.

2. Does the behavior of BC drivers change if the user is not tied to an AD Domain?

3. Unless it is an absolute requirement to use Bootcamp, do you want to consider VirtualBox ( or other Virtualization solutions) in your environment?

Hi Loner T,

Man, you are everywhere! Thanks for your response.

1. I have used Windows Enterprise with no problem for the past 3 years.. I wasn't aware if it wasn't officially supported (the documentation just says Windows 7 and doesn't name versions)

2. This is a great suggestion... I'll try it.

3. I am not sure that virtualization is where we want to go. I will explore that if I totally exhaust all possibilities, but for now I wanted to see if I could crack this.. We run a lot of architectural and rendering programs that are very CPU and graphics card-intensive, so I would rather avoid virtual solutions unless absolutely necessary.

Thanks for the suggestions, they give me another angle to try though...
